One last stop. A completely different world.

Bryan's final stop took him from the narrow, shaded streets of Old Dubai, where traditional homes were designed to capture breezes and escape the desert heat, to the extraordinary scale of the Burj Khalifa and Palm Jumeirah.

Along the way, a traditional Emirati breakfast, a boat ride across Dubai Creek and a little bargaining in the souks.

Quite a contrast in architecture, culture and ways of living. And a fascinating reminder that good design begins with understanding the people and places it serves.

A fitting end to an extraordinary journey.

Vienna certainly knows how to make an impression!

After the IDC trade mission, Bryan and Katherine have extended their European travels to enjoy a little more architecture, history, and culture on their own.

From the magnificent Austrian National Library to the Hofburg and Schönbrunn palaces, inspiration is everywhere.

And while the sightseeing is personal, their appreciation for historic spaces is something we share at Stone & Associates. Heritage is part of our work here in Ontario, too, where preserving character while accommodating modern life is an important part of thoughtful design.

One of the highlights of Bryan and Katherine's visit to Northern Bohemia's Crystal Valley was Lasvit's Glass House, a building clad in cast glass panels designed to echo the slate roofs of the region.

It's a striking example of how traditional materials and advanced manufacturing can expand architectural possibilities.

Travelling with fellow Canadian designers as part of the , Bryan and Katherine have had a firsthand look at the craftsmanship, technical expertise and innovation behind contemporary glass design.

After four decades in practice, their curiosity remains an important part of how Stone & Associates approaches every project.

Design is better when ideas are shared.

Day two in Prague brought Bryan and Katherine together with their fellow Canadian interior designers for Designblok’s Professionals’ Day.

From architecture and design talks at the newly restored Výstaviště Praha (Industrial Palace) to new work in glass, lighting, furniture, and finishes at the Národní galerie Praha (National Gallery Prague), the day offered plenty to see and, just as importantly, plenty to talk about.

One of the real values of a design mission is the opportunity to exchange ideas, make connections, and experience another design community together.

has given us plenty to talk about already. There’s more to come.

There’s something different about experiencing a material where its story began.

Day one of the Interior Designers of Canada design mission gave Bryan and Katherine a closer look at Czech glass in Prague, from Moser’s nearly 170-year history to the contemporary approaches of Dechem, Bomma and Qubus, followed by the opening of Rückl’s new flagship.

What stood out wasn’t simply the glass, but the context around it: the materials, techniques, design thinking, and local conditions that have helped make glass such an important part of Czech design.

Seeing the work here adds another layer to understanding it and value to specifying it.

Good design is informed by understanding what goes into it.

This week’s IDC () design mission is taking Bryan and Katherine from Designblok and studio visits in Prague into the Czech Republic’s renowned glassmaking tradition, with visits to glassworks, lighting manufacturers and design destinations across Northern Bohemia. It’s an opportunity to look more closely at the materials, processes and ideas behind the work.

There is value in seeing how things are made, not simply how they are used.

Here are a few glimpses from the week so far.

Creative fuel looks a lot like this. Waking up to snow-covered forests through panoramic geometric windows, thoughtful architectural lines, and spa-inspired details reminds us why design matters: it shapes how we experience a space, a moment, a memory.
