With rain and warmer temperatures on the way and snow rapidly melting, remember that any basement is at risk of flooding, even if it’s never happened before. Flooding can happen quickly with little warning. Take action today to protect your home.

Clear snow away from your foundation, providing a path for water to follow the natural grade around your house. Ensure your downspouts are clear of snow and ice so water can be routed safely away. Monitor any catch basins that may be near your property and help keep them clear to prevent flooding. And look up: keep your eye out for icicles that have formed and may fall from your eaves.

Test sump pumps and backwater valves (if you have them), ensure backup power is available, and move valuables out of basements if possible. Prepare an emergency kit if you don’t already have one to make sure you’re ready to take quick action.
