You've probably seen this white staining on brick before, but it's more than just a cosmetic issue.

Known as efflorescence, it forms when moisture moves through masonry and carries naturally occurring mineral salts to the surface. Once the water evaporates, the salts remain as a white, powdery deposit.

While efflorescence itself isn't usually a structural concern, it can be an early sign that moisture is moving through the wall. Understanding why it's happening is just as important as cleaning what's visible. 🧱

Restoring this historic building was about preserving a small piece of Kingston's architectural heritage so future generations can continue to enjoy it.

On heritage buildings, selecting the right mortar is one of the most important decisions in the restoration process.

Modern mortars are often harder than the original brick or stone. When that happens, moisture can become trapped instead of escaping as the wall was designed to, leading to cracking, spalling, and premature deterioration.

Heritage restoration begins with understanding the original materials and choosing a compatible mortar that allows the building to perform as intended.

Sometimes, the materials you don't notice are doing the most important work. 🧱
