Curious about the basic stages of a residential electrical project? Here's a generic break down of a typical residential electrical wiring project in manageable phases:

Phase 1: Demolition & Temporary Power
- First, we'll carefully remove any existing electrical systems that are being replaced.
- We might need temporary power on-site for tools and lighting. This usually involves setting up temporary jobsite receptacles and lighting. Remember, a permit is required for any temporary power setup.

Phase 2: Rough-in Wiring
- This is where the bulk of the wiring happens. We'll run all the branch wiring, install junction boxes, and set up lighting drivers.
- All of this work will be inspected *before* the drywall goes up, so it's a crucial step.

Phase 3: Finishing Touches
- Now for the final details! We'll install all the devices and equipment, right down to the cover plates.
- It's often at this stage that the electrical panel work is done and everything gets energized and any temporary wiring is removed.

ARC FAULT BREAKERS AND PROTECTION DEVICES

Arc fault electrical breakers are devices that can prevent electrical fires by detecting and stopping arc faults, which are sparks caused by damaged or faulty wires. They are cheap, easy to install, and required by code.

They can also help you find and fix problems in your electrical system before they cause a fire. Arc fault electrical breakers are a smart and safe investment for your home.

There are also arc fault receptacles available which do the same task without the need for panel work. This is typically useful for adding any new wiring to an existing circuit or when wanting to protect something old you are unsure about. Although they won't protect the wiring coming form the panel to the first arc fault receptacle, they are still a great option in many cases, especially when there may not be room in the panel.

Make sure its a "combination" type as required by code. It will say CAFI on it.

A good contractor is proud of their work👍🛠🚧

Someone who is great at their job also takes pride in what they produce. It’s not just about personal satisfaction. It is about an exceptional outcome. Don’t assume contractors are just in it for the money. Some of us really enjoy doing a good job.

Electrical is a very common issue that we see in the projects we work on. You have a handyman or you have a framer, and they say, “I can do your electrical as well.” And you end up seeing a ton of fire hazards at almost every job.
Always bring in a licensed electrical contractor. In some areas, it's the law.

Wondering if the electrical product you bought is approved for use legally in Canada?

Just because you bought it here doesn't mean it's approved for installation.

Check out this link to ESA's list of approval markings and know you're safe and legal!

Permits and inspections protect you and your contractor.

I hear a fair bit from consumers who don't want to spend a few bucks to have electrical work inspected. This is ultimately self-defeating as these steps are in place to protect you and everyone involved. It's not expensive.

It doesn't matter how large or small the job was. Items that require permits, require permits.

Work done illegally in the past will need to be addressed by an electrical contractor who will take the necessary action to rectify things with ESA.
Don't wait until it becomes a problem.
Get an electrical contractor.
Take out a permit.
Get the previous work inspected.

Heated floors make a room, especially a basement, feel much more inviting.

Another great idea is heating specific areas of your breakfast bar or island to keep your arms and plates from being chilled by the cold stone counter!
