Driving home from one of my clients gardens after doing some fall cleanup and I spotted some bright red drupes/berries growing on a tall shrub, so I had to stop and check out out.

These can be made into jelly or syrup, but it’s primary medicinal value comes from the bark which has been used for centuries across Europe as an antispasmodic and muscle relaxant and can also be taken internally for heart and blood pressure, cold and immune health, muscle tension, kidney and urinary tract support and menstrual relief, to name a few.

Can you guess which medicinal plant I found by fluke???

Hint: It resembles and sometimes goes by the name of a well known and loved plant, but it isn’t really part of that genus of plants at all.

Why did you plant Mums when they are just a “garbage”plant? My client asked me a month ago. I questioned her, “A garbage plant, why do you say that?””Because they a one year only plant and don’t come back the next year. “ she offered. I smiled and gave a little chuckle because I thought that one too!
So I explained to her why I love to add mums into every clients gardens.

“Well, you asked for three seasons of flowering plants and in my gardens, chrysanthemums bring in lovely fall colours and interest and mine DO come back year after year, as long as the critters don’t dig it up before it’s established in its place. The trick is to add a good layer of mulch over the root bed in the fall and it comes back bigger and better every year!”

“Well, I think they are a garbage plant and don’t want them.” she said decisively.

“Ok, I’ll take them out when I return next week. I obliged her and decided I loved the two toned pink I picked out especially for her garden and would plant them elsewhere.

“I’ve already pulled them out and put them in pots on my deck and stairs and will throw them after they die.” she added, her mind made up. There was no changing her mind by showing her pictures of what one clients mums looked like today. 🤭

Have you seen any woolly bear caterpillars yet this year? I have come across a few this fall, all black head and tail with an orange middle.

What are they telling you about how winter is going to be in your neck of the woods? 🖤🧡🤎

I bet you are wondering what I’m up to this fall. Well, here’s a hint, it has something to do with this anecdotal story;

After a very full work week away in Kingston, participating in team building activities and then attending two of her besties birthday parties on the weekend, Chloë wasn’t feeling so hot and took some time off to recoop. Not only was her monthly cycle very voracious this month but she also caught a bug while away.
So what did Momma Bear do??? She remembered her indigenous roots and made a pitcher of herbal tea from red raspberry leaves, mullein leaf, ginger, cinnamon and honey to help.

Have you guessed what new adventure I’ve embarked on? Put your guess in the comments below. 👇👇👇

How do these plants help??

Red raspberry leaf contains compounds, such as fragarine, tannins, and flavonoids that affect smooth muscle tissue, including the uterus. Laboratory studies show that raspberry leaf extracts can both stimulate and relax smooth muscle, depending on the tissue's existing tone.

Mullein leaves contain mucilage, a gelatinous substance that coats and soothes inflamed mucous membranes in the throat and lungs. Naturally occurring saponins, help break up, loosen, and thin out stubborn phlegm so it can be coughed up more easily. Flavonoid and Iridoid compounds contribute mild anti-inflammatory and soothing properties to calm ticklish, dry, or irritated coughs.

Cinnamon reduces menstrual pain severity, duration, and associated nausea or heavy bleeding by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis.

Ginger is as effective as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, reducing pain intensity when started at period onset. She drank it up and took the rest to work with her the next day.

‼️ Pregnancy: If there is any chance you might be pregnant, exercise caution. Red raspberry leaf can stimulate uterine contractions, which is why it is often avoided in early pregnancy.

‼️ Hormone-Sensitive Conditions: Because raspberry leaf may exert mild estrogen-like effects, talk to a healthcare provider before using it if you have conditions like endometriosis, uterine fibroids, or hormone-sensitive cancers.

Happy Birthday to all the other Virgos this month! Plum pudding pinwheel dahlias, orange thumbelina zinnias, candycane and giant pink zinnias and purple obedient plant for a very regal

This Happy Birthday Virgo bouquet is to recognize our most recent year around the sun, (my 51st).

I know just how special each of you are, for we share the same the same astrological sign and personality traits.

We are;

1. Analytical & Sharp: Quick to solve complex problems and break big projects down into manageable steps.

2. Reliable & Grounded: Strong desire to be useful, dependable, punctual, and consistent—if a Virgo says they'll do it, consider it done.

3. Service-Oriented: Express love and care through our practical nature to help, perform thoughtful acts, and fix real-world problems.

4. Detail-Oriented: Exceptional eyes for nuance, organization, and efficiency.
As an Earth sign ruled by Mercury, we excel at processing information, organizing systems, and noticing details others miss.

If you love a Virgo, you should also know about our potential blind spots we may need help focusing on;

1. Perfectionism: Can set unrealistically high standards for themselves and others, leading to frustration. 🙋🏽‍♀️

2. Overthinking: Tends to loop on worst-case scenarios or over-analyze simple situations. 🙋🏽‍♀️

3. Self-Critical: Often far harsher on themselves than anyone else would ever be. 🙋🏽‍♀️

4. Reserved: We can appear guarded and or overly quiet until we trust someone with our closest thoughts and feelings. 🙋🏽‍♀️

Bouquet: Plum pudding pinwheel dahlias, orange thumbelina zinnias, candycane and giant pink zinnias and purple obedient plant

The hot peppers are coming along and finally starting to ripen. Scotch bonnet, Thai chili, red cayenne, Serrano, yellow reaper, jalapeño and Mulato isleno are all spicy peppers full of capsaicin. In gardening capsaicin is used to repel insects, rodents and other pests, so while I do like spicy things, most of these peppers will be going towards making my own repellent.

How do you use up the hot peppers you harvest?

This year I’ve been growing cucamelons and I think they’re one of the cutest things growing in my garden next to my teeny tiny currant tomatoes.

They look like tiny watermelons, but taste more like a little cucumber with a slightly tangy, citrusy kick. I usually just eat them straight from the vine before they are fully ripe, but I’ve also cut used them whole or cut in salads and fresh tomato and basil dishes, so we shall see if I end up with any leftover for seed harvesting for next year.

What everyone else does with them.
If you grow cucamelons, what’s your favorite way to eat them? And how do you manage the cucabeetles?
