To be completely honest, our world was sent into a bit of a tailspin with the recent Health Canada recall of our Shades of Grey soap. While we respect the role Health Canada plays in consumer safety, the situation has understandably raised concerns and questions — so we’d like to explain how Health Canada compliance works and what this recall actually means.
As shared in our previous post, Health Canada recently added Bay Oil to their Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist and lowered the recommended usage amount. Bay is an essential oil used in this particular bar. Prior to this change, Shades of Grey was fully compliant and considered safe under Health Canada cosmetic standards, just like all of our products. This regulatory update is the only reason this soap was recalled.
Health Canada updates ingredient standards from time to time, and as compliant makers, it’s our responsibility to stay informed and make adjustments when changes occur — which we always do with care and diligence.
We hope our customers can take comfort in knowing that we are, and always have been, compliant with Health Canada safety regulations, and that transparency and product safety remain at the heart of everything we create.
