🐝 Did you know?
The Okanagan is home to several stinging insects, including:
⚫ Western Yellowjackets – The most common "picnic crashers." They're highly aggressive and can sting multiple times.
🟡 Common Yellowjackets – Often build nests inside walls, attics, crawlspaces, and under decks.
🌱 Ground-Nesting Yellowjackets ("Ground Wasps") – One of the most dangerous nests to accidentally disturb! These colonies are built underground in abandoned rodent burrows, landscaping, under rocks, or along walking paths. A lawn mower, w**d trimmer, or even stepping too close can trigger hundreds of defensive wasps to swarm.
⚪ Bald-faced Hornets – Despite their name, they're actually a type of yellowjacket! Their large, football-shaped paper nests are commonly found in trees, shrubs, and under roof eaves, and they fiercely defend their colony.
🟤 Paper Wasps – Usually less aggressive than yellowjackets but will defend their open, umbrella-shaped nests if threatened.
⚠️ Late summer is peak wasp season! Colonies are at their largest, and wasps become increasingly aggressive as they search for sugary foods and protect their nests.
❌ Please don't climb a ladder or attempt to remove a nest yourself. Disturbing a colony can result in dozens—or even hundreds—of painful stings in seconds. If you suspect a ground nest, keep children and pets away and give us a call.
