It's been a busy season over here for our little team! Thankful ❤️
We've had a lot of folks tell us about rats they've seen on roofs, fence posts, windows etc. If you have rats climbing things, this is an excellent way to set traps for them!
You're going to want two traps - one for either direction of travel (see photo 1). If it's a vertical post, one facing up and one facing down is the way to go.
Next you'll need to secure your traps so they don't fall if bumped or weather picks up. In photo 2, I have secured the trap by twisting wire tightly around the trap and the railing. If you aren't worried about screw holes in the location you are trapping in, you can also use a few wood screws to secure it to a wooden railing or fence. Whatever method you use, it's important that the trap will not move or skip off if a rat makes contact with it.
Lastly, baiting it - peanut butter is an excellent, cheap option but you can also use bacon grease, cheese, or anything else that can be smeared and has some strong scent. Just beware of other critters in the area and try to hide traps in areas where foliage or overhangs can help hide the traps, or you may end up catching an unintended curious bird.
