When it comes to electric vehicle charging, are smart (Level 2) chargers worth the investment? Many new EV owners see that their new vehicles come with a charging cord (Level 1) that seems to only need a basic plug to function. Well, with level 2 charging comes several extra perks to the process, notably a faster rate of charge, better compatibility with most models, the ability to monitor and control your charging process through smartphone apps or other online platforms, limited energy management, and load balancing if you are charging multiple electric vehicles. The extra utilities that a smart charger can bring make it a great accompaniment to any EV owner looking for more control and information of their charging system.

It's the greenest time of year! But St. Patrick's Day is more than just wearing shamrocks and searching for leprechauns—it's about embracing the sense of community and spreading positivity wherever we go. Just as St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity, we're reminded of the power of unity, diversity, and coming together for a common purpose. Happy St. Patrick's Day from the Project Electric team!

Which is it? In the early days of electrification, the standard voltage supplied to homes was indeed closer to 110 volts. As technology advanced and electrical systems were standardized, the voltage was increased to around 120 volts to improve the efficiency of power transmission over longer distances and to accommodate the growing demand for electricity. The modern standard of 120V became recognized national standard in 1967. The more you know!

Have you wondered what is happening to devices that experience surge events without protection? Electronics that are not shielded by surge protection are vulnerable to the negative effects of power surges and voltage spikes. The excessive voltage from these events can cause degradation of sensitive components, high heat, short-circuits, data loss on storage devices and possible fire hazards; most annoyingly, in some cases these effects will not be immediately observable and will only begin to occur intermittently. It is important to invest in high quality surge protection equipment if we want to get the most out of our electronic devices and appliances. You wouldn't want to filter your water with a screen door! Reach out and ask us about whole-home surge protection for more information.

Installing dimmer switches can add a new level of functionality, ambiance, and energy efficiency to your home or office lighting. Some areas worth considering include family & living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, home offices, kitchens, accent lighting in cabinets, and conference room, though any space where the ability to control the ambience of the space is a fine candidate for light dimming. Dimmers also save energy, extend the life span of your bulbs, and can help reduce strain on eyes!

Have you ever gazed out the window during a thunderstorm and wondered what kind of voltage potential is inside of the lightning bolts dancing down from the sky? The voltage in a lightning strike can vary significantly depending on various factors such as the length of the lightning bolt, the strength of the electric field, and the specific conditions of the lightning discharge. On average, a typical cloud-to-ground lightning strike can carry voltages in the range of 100 million to 1 billion volts. For reference, most of the modern primary power lines found on poles outside of a home are only 25kV, and transmission lines from the dams only go as high as 500kV. Stay safe during storms!
