Swedish Columnar Aspen Diagnosis 🌳
Today on site I’m diagnosing declining columnar aspens and replacing one that had fully failed.
Early signs included cupped leaves, dieback, and uneven growth—but the real issue became clear after digging in: the tree was planted too deep.
The root flare was completely buried, restricting oxygen exchange and disrupting the vascular system (xylem & phloem). Over time, this led to severe decline and internal decay.
Key reminder: always expose the root flare and avoid burying the trunk. Planting depth is critical for long-term tree health.
Installed corrections included proper flare exposure, improved mulch placement, and temporary wind support.

Pagoda Dogwood Replacement & Root Preparation

The removal of the old pagoda dogwood went smoothly with no issues. The real work came with preparing the replacement tree for proper planting.
The new pagoda dogwood from the nursery had a noticeably higher soil line than what the final planting depth required. Before installation, we corrected the root structure by adjusting and treating the root zone to ensure the root flare was properly exposed and ready for long-term establishment.
Getting the root structure right at planting makes all the difference in how the tree performs over time.

🌿 Another great project completed! 🌿
A big shout-out to BND Landscape and Brianne Davis for trusting us with this subcontracted project.
Our team tackled a variety of landscape maintenance and pruning tasks, including:
✅ Reducing an overgrown mahonia hedge to approximately 3 feet in height
✅ Line trimming and cleanup throughout the property
✅ Shaping Saskatoon bushes for a cleaner, more refined appearance
✅ Canopy reduction on a large walnut tree by approximately one-third
✅ Significant reduction and lifting of Siberian elm growth to improve structure and clearance
✅ Debris removal and detailed cleanup throughout the site
✅ Selective hedge pruning to create a more consistent and symmetrical appearance while preserving the natural character of individual plants
It's always rewarding to transform an overgrown landscape into a clean, well-maintained space while keeping the health and long-term structure of the plants in mind.

🌿 A Final Garden Walk Through a Special Landscape 🌿
Today was likely my last visit to this incredible garden, as the homeowners have moved on to their next chapter. Before leaving, I took one final walk through the property to appreciate the collection of plants, trees, and years of careful stewardship that made this landscape truly unique.
From sargentia hydrangeas, witch hazel, pagoda dogwood, and Korean lilacs to grafted fruit trees, Dawn redwood, ginkgo, tree peonies, and the stunning linear-leaf buckthorn hedge, every corner offered something special. The garden blended ornamental beauty with edible harvests, featuring peaches, raspberries, vegetables, and multi-grafted fruit trees, all woven into a thoughtfully designed landscape.
This property may be modest in size, but it showcases how plant selection, proper pruning, and attention to detail can create a truly high-end garden experience. It's always rewarding to care for landscapes that are filled with character, rarity, and seasonal interest.

🌲 Cedar Health Assessment 🌲

Sometimes the issue isn't what you see above ground—it's what's happening below the surface.

During a recent cedar assessment, we discovered several installation issues contributing to plant stress: • Landscape fabric and rock placed too close to the trunks • Exposed root balls with insufficient soil coverage • Roots becoming restricted by fabric • Irrigation line running directly through a cedar • Early signs of spider mite activity • Cedars planted too close together, limiting long-term growth

After exposing the root zones and removing restrictions, these cedars are in a much better position to recover. Moving forward, adding organic matter, improving soil biology, and encouraging healthy root development will be key to restoring their vigor.

🌿 Transplanting plants properly is all about protecting the root system and setting the plant up for long-term success.
At Keitz Landscape, we start by carefully digging around the plant instead of prying it out of the ground. That helps preserve a large root ball and reduces transplant shock.
From there, we dig a new hole roughly 1.5× the size of the root ball, fill it with water to check drainage, then amend and prepare the area before backfilling. Proper preparation below grade makes a huge difference above grade. 🌱
Healthy roots, proper drainage, and careful installation all play a role in whether a transplant merely survives — or truly thrives.

🌿 3 Spray Techniques Every Plant Lover Should Know
When applying foliar sprays like insecticidal soap, nutrients, or pest control products, how you spray matters just as much as what you spray.
💧 Spray to Wet
A light, even mist that coats the leaf surface without any dripping.
• Leaves look evenly damp
• No runoff
• Used for light foliar feeding or preventative sprays
💦 Spray to Drip
Apply enough product that droplets form and begin to fall from the leaves.
• Full leaf coverage (top and bottom)
• Slight dripping is normal
• Best for most pest and disease control applications
🚿 Spray to Runoff
A heavy application until liquid is running off the plant.
• Maximum saturation
• Product visibly dripping off foliage and into soil
• Used only for heavy infestations or specific situations
🌱 Pro Tip: Most sprays work best when you spray to drip — enough coverage without wasting product.

✂️ Pruning tip from Keitz Landscape 🌿
When it comes to pruning, the type of stem matters more than you might think.
For herbaceous perennials with soft stems, we prefer to make a slight angled cut just above a node. Softer tissue holds moisture more easily, which can increase the risk of fungal and bacterial decay, so angling the cut helps water shed off and allows the tissue to dry faster while encouraging clean regrowth from the node.
For woody perennials and trees, we switch techniques. A clean cut just outside the branch collar (following its natural angle, away from the bark ridge) reduces unnecessary wound size and allows the plant to seal the area more efficiently through natural compartmentalization.
