Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a great Christmas and enjoyed some time off. Over the holidays, Mack took some time to finish updating a bathroom at his place. This room originally had a 12’ vaulted ceiling and no exhaust fan to extract the moisture from the shower. Hot, humid air would rise to the peak and then drip down the walls. A year ago, we framed in a level ceiling at 8’, installed an exhaust fan and some pot lights and cladded it with prefinished tongue and groove materials. It has made a world of difference. This winter, we built a new oak vanity that matches the staircase we built right outside this room. The laminate countertop was also built in our shop. To finish it off, we replaced the door, baseboards and casing.

In need of custom cabinetry and millwork? We are happy to help!

Here is another bathroom transformation we completed at our project in North York. This bathroom was last renovated in the ‘80s using salvaged marble slabs that came out of an old hotel that was being demolished. 50+ years later, the marble had become loose, cracked, stained and in need of replacement. We replaced the large tub with a walk-in shower, tiled the floor and walls, made and installed new mouldings for the door and window and built a custom medicine cabinet and a beautiful oak vanity designed like a piece of furniture. We turned the legs on a lathe to match an inspiration picture our client showed us, and they are absolutely thrilled with result.

One of two bathroom renovations we completed in this 1930s home in the Lytton Park neighbourhood of North York this year. This is the smaller of the two, which was last renovated in the early ‘80s and due for a makeover that honours the age of the house. We completely gutted, re-insulated, repaired/straightened framing, drywalled, painted and tiled this bathroom. In our shop we made new mouldings for the original window and door, a beautiful medicine cabinet and a practical drawer unit to fill the small alcove in the corner. Stay tuned for pictures of the next one!

A small restoration project that we completed on a historic storefront (1888) near Bloor and Spadina in Toronto. The mouldings above the bay windows were rotted from many, many winters of snow piling against them, and this summer some squirrels decided to take advantage of their soft, weakened state and made a real mess! We made custom, solid wood mouldings in our shop to match the existing ones, matched the paint colour and sealed things up appropriately to keep this beautiful facade looking fresh. We tied the new millwork into the existing trim on the sides of the building which is still very solid. Many people walking by were happy to see this damage being properly repaired and even stopped to compliment the work. Preservation of historic structures like this is important and we feel blessed to have the opportunity to maintain this building for our wonderful clients.
Stay tuned for an update on a large project we are finishing up in North York!

New flooring, doors, trim and paint really freshened up this two bedroom guesthouse! Apart from replacing the windows, baseboard heaters and light fixtures, this project is complete. We removed the 1960s mahogany trim, carpet, peeling linoleum, tub surround and toilet and repaired a bunch of drywall cracks before installing the new flooring, millwork and fixtures. We also built a custom bar cart for the kitchen to match the existing cabinetry.

Our clients wanted to avoid modern trends and keep a traditional look, so we guided them through their design decisions to achieve that. Millwork is so important in telling the story of the space it is installed in, but is so often overlooked or a last-minute, rushed decision. Size, profile, and material choices matter and we care about those details at Trubuilt!

Here’s a look at some custom cabinetry and millwork we worked on in this beautiful home in Pickering designed by Sarah Holtby! The vaulted ceilings and beams, 8’ tall doors, casing, baseboard, and cabinetry seen here were all installed by us. We especially love how the black walnut cabinetry turned out with the unlacquered brass hardware! Excited to see how the fireplace turns out once the stone is installed!

It’s been a while since we’ve posted on here because we have been busy working on our largest custom cabinetry job to date! This project includes a newly designed kitchen with a massive 5’x10.5’ island, two bathroom vanities, a small mudroom cabinet, a linen storage cabinet, and a large 9’x13’ walk-in closet, as well as hanging some new interior doors and replacing the baseboards on the main floor. In total, we built 64 drawers/pullouts for this house… talk about a lot of storage!
In this post, we will look at the kitchen. When we work with our clients to design their new kitchen, the details matter to us. Notice how we designed the sizes of each cabinet so that the sink is centred on the range hood, the entire island is centred on the fridge, none of the doors look out of place being too wide or too narrow and there are no wide filler pieces that waste space. We even design the cabinetry around the specific appliances to give it a seamless look as well. All of our fillers are flush with the doors for more of an inset look. The oak shelves are stained to match the new hardwood flooring and even have integrated LED lighting just like the upper cabinets. There are way too many other great features to list in this new custom kitchen!
Stay tuned to see the rest of the cabinetry soon!
