Good course design goes far beyond the flight of the disc.

At Killarney Lake Park in Fredericton, NB, Fluent Disc Sport has approached construction with the same level of thought we put into the golf itself, focusing on durability, maintainability, aesthetics and minimizing the course's long-term footprint.

Ground-flush artificial turf tees are built over deep gravel sub-bases for drainage and longevity, with 3-4' of gravel surrounding each pad and reinforced exits in the areas that will see the most wear.

Every hole also includes a full disc golf cart path, built on a gravel base for stability and drainage, then top-dressed with wood chips so it blends naturally into the surrounding forest. Basket areas and other concentrated traffic zones have been similarly treated to reduce wear and erosion before they become problems.

On steeper terrain, we've used ground shaping to create better routes for players, pull carts and maintenance equipment, while reusing material generated during construction throughout the course rather than treating it as waste.

We've also planned for how the course will change over time. Maintenance needs will be different during the first few years as canopy coverage develops and disturbed areas recover, and different again once player traffic patterns are fully established.

The goal is a Fluent course that looks finished from day one, performs well over the long term, and becomes even more natural as it matures.

China Leg 3 - Chongli (The Olympic Venue)

So we've left Beijing, and Jumping and I are going over our talking points on the high speed train to Chongli District in Zhangjiakou.

Chongli hosted the majority of the snow events during the 2022 Winter Olympics. There are actually a number of ski resorts in the area, but Yunding / Genting Resort is where the actual events were held, and it was pretty exciting to be able to tour the grounds and see the halfpipe and freestyle venues, locations I watched for hours on end during the Olympics!

Jumping and I were preparing because this was not the first time that Genting has tested the waters with Disc Golf, it's actually the third. This was our chance to show why the other attempts hadn't panned out and what it meant to work with a proper design firm which specializes in finding solutions to unique problems, one which can balance the needs of the sport with the needs and goals of the property owner.

During one of our video sessions, we were filming at the top of the mountain, which many visitors tour for sightseeing, demonstrating some putting practice with a portable basket. Over time, more and more people began to come see what we were doing, and started picking up the loose discs to give it a try. We ended up with 20+ spectators of all ages, all enchanted by the game. At one point a grandmother was giving it a try and made a couple 20' putts, much to the crowds enjoyment, as they all erupted in cheers every time one went in.... you couldn't buy this kind of organic marketing!

Jumping and I met with Genting Resorts management, and it couldn't have gone better. Despite my language barrier, we were able to demonstrate our knowledge and passion, our understanding of what a viable solution might look like, and a strong long term growth plan. Our quick lunch plan turned into a full day excursion to another resort, a couple hours at a driving range (I had mentioned my families golf heritage, read more here: https://fluentdisc.com/en/The-Company/Roots-in-Golf/), a trip up the mountain so we could walk down a ski run covered in Lavender, Poppies, and Chrysanthemums (this was magical!). We finished off the day with a traditional dinner, and a desire on all sides to continue our work together!

The mountains where Genting Resort is located are actually just south of Inner Mongolia, and are much more like Canada's Laurentian mountains than the Rockies. They have soft tops, lots of plateaus and relatively low slope areas, with mixed lower height vegetation and higher alpine style forests. It makes for pristine disc golf terrain with unparalleled views!

I spent a final morning scouting the mountain in the areas I'd identified earlier as our target course footprint. Our long term goal is a phased build of what will eventually be a mixed destination-style course for travelling players and event hosting (think PDGA Asia Tour, Chinese Nationals), and a short and approachable, low impact, active family friendly attraction that is capable of delivering a constant flow of novice players through a fun and safe environment.

China is a country that when it gets behind a sport, goes all in. So being able to put Disc Golf in front of a new audience in an area that sees more than 10 million summer visitors per year, as they escape the summer heat of Beijing, is not only a tremendous opportunity for Fluent, it's a chance to be involved in what we hope will be the spark that ignites the sport in China.

One more post to follow, stay tuned!

China Leg 2

After Qingdao I took the high speed train (350kph!) to Beijing where I was met by Jumping Cheung, my host, guide, interpreter, and friend who would be with me through the rest of my trip. Jumping is also one of China's top FPO players, a past member of China's National Disc Golf Team, and someone with a great perspective on our sport in China. She had invaluable insights to offer throughout our meetings and discussions.

Our first stop was a Hotpot in Beijing for some lunch, my first Hotpot, and another stop on my culinary journey. I made it a point to never say no on this trip, I tried everything I was offered, and it ended up helping me significantly to earn the respect of everyone I met! I think it almost became a challenge for everyone to find something I couldn't stomach. I'll just say, it got "interesting" ;)

Over the next couple days I was guided around Beijing to see two of China's most popular disc golf courses to get a feel for what "the bar" is. We were joined by a number of other local disc golfers at the first and had a great time playing into the twilight. The next day we played the second in stifling heat, but it was a beautiful park setting with lots of trails and other activities.

Between what I saw at the two courses and the insights Jumping offered, it was clear that maintenance is a challenge and not always consistent. One of the issues that I feel leads to this is that the courses are designed by existing avid players... for other players, incorporating too much challenge, too many hazards, and difficult navigation while trying to squeeze the most out of the spaces. This means they're not well played, because they're not the kind of courses that encourage new players to try or take up the sport. This was an important insight which helped to hone our messaging for our third leg.

After our round on our last day in Beijing before heading north, I was treated to a tour of the "old city" outside of the walls of the forbidden city, a part of Bejing that goes back more than 850 years to the 12th century and the Jin Dynasty. It was magnificent! After walking the streets for a while admiring old buildings, the surrounding lakes, and parks, we hiked up Jingshan, a mount directly north of the forbidden city which gave us an amazing sweeping view over the surrounding areas at sunset. It was breathtaking! From there we biked through the city and stopped at a rooftop patio for the rest of the evening overlooking the city, and raised a glass to the end of my second leg.

The next morning before our next train north, we stopped at another local park where there used to be a disc golf course, played catch in a sparse but shaded area where we could try shot shaping our putter tosses to each other and just talk shop for a while.

Next, on to Chongli, stay tuned!

And just like that, I say goodbye to Moncton, so long, and thanks for all the fish! I spent yesterday walking the fully flagged course with Heather Fraser, a woman who has worn lots of hats in her career, and who will ultimately deliver the most significant part of the build, the forest work.

As a naturalist, she taught me about lots of the local flora, and had me chewing on Sarsaparilla root right out of the ground! She and I share a common belief that the work we will be doing will improve the overall health of the forest at Centennial Park, and that the course will deliver a significant new resource to the players and other visitors to the park!

I'm so excited to have completed this round of work, and very much look forward to seeing it start to take shape!

Hot on the heels of his Podium at provincials last week, Bryce took 1st place at the Algonquin Fall Classic in MA2 on Sat!

With an overall event rating of 960, combined with his 957 event rating from provincials (including a 972 hot round), this will very likely be his final event in MA2 as he'll be rated out. Good luck in MA1 next season Bryce!

Wonder if it had anything to do with the course full of Fluent Borealis Championship disc golf baskets the club installed this spring? πŸ˜‰

China Leg 1

I got to spend almost a month in China, how cool is that! I was already heading there for a couple weeks on a family vacation, so I reached out to my contacts there and offered to extend my stay if they could put me to work. That they did, and it was AMAZING!

After leaving my family in Shanghai, I took a flight to Qingdao, both a major manufacturing and shipping hub in China, and the home of Tsingtao b**r! I was able to meet with my Chinese partners, tour the factory, and test some new products we've been working on.

I also go to play my first round of disc golf in China! After our round, we talked about the quirks of designing courses in China over lunch, and the unique challenges they face like how public land is managed, visibility of a sport with only ~30 courses in a country of 1.5 billion, and strategies for growing visibility and finding the right development partners. After scouting two locations, I was able to walk everyone through the basics of course design while we laid out a new 6 hole family friendly course in a well used corner of a major park. In a city of ~10 million people, this central course will help showcase the sport to a new generation of players!

It was a short but highly productive stay in Qingdao, I can't wait till my next visit! The next leg takes me north to Beijing, look for another post in a day or two!

Congratulations to our very own Bryce Farley for making the podium and taking down 3rd place at the 2026 Ontario Provincial Disc Golf Championships last weekend in Kemptville, ON! It was a great 3 days of play, the organizers did a fantastic job!

In our free time, including the tournament courses, Bryce and I were able to notch 6 more disc golf courses in our course collection, we paid a visit to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, and toured a lot of backroads as we explored the countryside!

What a summer for Fluent!

It feels like I've spent more "time on the road" in the last few months than at home, I'm actually writing this from Moncton, NB right now on yet another work trip and there's still more to come!

Things started strong in July with the opening of two new Disc Golf Discovery Zones in Washago Centennial Park, and Mathison Conservation area in Havelock. I also attended the grand re-opening of our newly redesigned course at Pittock Conservation Area in Woodstock with my team from the city, the conservation authority, the Mayor and number of councillors... and those events were just the beginning!

I spent almost a month in China, Japan and South Korea on a mixed family/work trip which was mind blowing. I designed a new course in Qingdao, China, and laid the groundwork for a another which we hope to break ground on in the spring (remember the Olympic Rings post from Aug?!?!). We've made some amazing new friends and partners overseas, and look forward to a long and fruitful future in international course development. So much more to say about this, so keep an eye out for additional posts and photo dumps!

Back in Canada, I just finished flagging our new course build in Moncton, and I'm off in a few days to Fredericton to sign off on their final build! Fredericton's Killarney Lake Park DGC will be opening the back 9 holes imminently, and based on the early reviews of the soft opened front 9, it should be battling it out with the top courses in the country next season!

After this, I'm headed south to continue work on a huge two-course project in North Carolina; a 9 hole Hybrid Discovery Zone, paired with a full fledged Championship course on the same property as a historic PGA championship golf course by one of our sister sports most impactful designers, a true honour! More to come on this too!

But wait, there's more... we have announcements coming out soon about our new Indoor Disc Golf Discovery Zone, another project State side, and probably most exciting... a new basket to compliment the Fluent Borealis!

This post is already too long, so stay tuned!
