🪷 Asters, in bloom until the frost arrives. 🪷

Quebec has over 20 native varieties of asters, many of which are very similar to each other. Some may be more familiar than others - New England Aster comes to mind. Which ones have you seen around Town?

Did you know Hudson has every single herbaceous invasive listed in Quebec's "Je te remplace" resource for the awareness and management of invasives? That is NOT a good record to have.

Thank you to Sean James for promoting all kinds of Nifty Natives for our gardens! There are too many to mention (we will share the pdf in our newsletter) but here are a few that shine in the Fall and Winter season: winterberry, aronia melanocarpa, helenium, new england aster, solidago caesia, gray dogwood, snowberry, prickly ash tree, witch hazel, nannyberry, larches and little blue stem.

🪴🌻Hudson Garden Club is having their Fall Plant Sale tomorrow starting at 9:30AM at Cardinal Brewing in Hudson until noon or when plants run out. Please bring a container to carry your purchases. 🌻🪴

📌📣 NOTE FOR MEMBERS DONATING PLANTS: Your plants, labeled and potted, will be gratefully received from 8:30 to 9:30am. Please no invasive species of plants. A reminder for non-residents donating plant material, Hudson By-law 739-2021 prohibits the use of insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and rodenticides across all of Hudson. Thank you so much for your donations and for helping out the club! 📣📌

🗓📌 A little reminder that tomorrow, Tuesday Sept 15, Sean James will be speaking on Nifty Native Plants at 7:30PM at St James Anglican Church, 642 rue Main, Hudson.

How thrilled are we to host this speaker in-person? Well just read on to know!

Sean James has been gardening professionally since age fourteen. He is a graduate of the prestigious Niagara Parks School of Horticulture, a Master Gardener and runs an environmentally-friendly landscaping company in Ontario where he has designed and implemented landscapes from Nova Scotia to California. Sean has been a regular speaker with horticultural societies, Master Gardener chapters, environmental groups and service clubs throughout Ontario for more than 30 years and was named one of “20 Canadians Making a Difference” in the Canada-wide magazine GardenMaking. He has presented at Canada Blooms, the North West Flower and Garden Show, several botanical gardens, and at landscape trade shows, including HortEast and CanWest, and has taught at the college level for almost two decades.

In this Talk Sean will tackle the belief that going native means a sacrifice in beauty. It does not! Sean will discuss various desirable ornamental natives, including some you may not know as native, and their benefits to birds and pollinators. Location suitability will be dealt with, including addressing difficult soils and situations. We may even get into the debate on ‘Nativars’! This will be a very entertaining and enlightening Talk!
