The best time to book a furnace inspection is before you need one. 🔧

Every October in the Foothills follows the same pattern. The first genuinely cold night arrives, thousands of furnaces run for the first time in months, and everyone who's been meaning to book calls around the same time.

Booking early means more flexibility — in when your appointment lands, and in the decisions you get to make if something turns up.

A proper furnace inspection isn't a filter change. Our technicians test all the electrical components including the control board, the blower and inducer motors, and the ignitor. They clean the flame sensor, confirm the thermostat is programmed correctly, verify gas pressure, check the filter, clean the furnace, and verify it's operating to the manufacturer's expectations.

Nobody calls us on a good day. 👋

When our phone rings, someone is usually standing in a basement they didn't plan to be standing in. There's water where there shouldn't be, or the house is getting colder, or something made a sound and then stopped making any sound at all.

The person who answers that call matters more than most people realize.

Meet Shayne L., our Service Manager and October's Employee of the Month.

Shayne came to G.M. in 2012 with 25+ years already in the trade - a journeyman plumber and gas fitter who's also completed refrigeration and AC courses. Our president Joe describes him as almost like a therapist, and he means it practically: a calm voice explaining what to do in the next twenty minutes prevents a surprising amount of damage before anyone arrives.

Your utility room is the most neglected room in the house - and the one most likely to cost you money. 🔦

You visit it maybe four times a year. Give it five minutes this weekend.

The base of your water heater. Rust or dampness here is one of the most important warning signs in the room. Tanks often give some indication before they fail.

Around your furnace. Soot, scorching, or corrosion near the burner.

The floor. Anything wet you can't explain deserves a second look.

Your nose. Any smell of gas means stop and call immediately - not "keep an eye on it."

The rating plates. Write down the model and serial numbers — the manufacture date is rarely printed plainly and is usually coded into the serial number. Call us with those numbers any time and we'll decode the date for you.

You're not diagnosing anything. You're answering one question: has anything changed?

Every winter, we get called out for a "dead furnace" that turns out to be a dead thermostat. 🌡️

Same panic. Same cold house. Same after-hours phone call. Completely different problem — and a much cheaper one.

Your thermostat is the brain of the whole system. When it fails, misreads the room, or loses power, the furnace never gets told to run. Nothing is actually wrong with the equipment downstairs.

Signs worth acting on before October:
-The display is dim, blank, or flickering
-The room temperature doesn't match what the thermostat claims
-The furnace short-cycles or runs at odd times
-It's an older unit you've never fully understood

Upgrading to a programmable thermostat is one of the least expensive ways to lower a gas bill — it turns the temperature down while the house is empty without you remembering to. And when we install a new furnace, a thermostat upgrade is part of the conversation.

Most furnace symptoms can wait a few days. A few can't. ⚠️

Here's the honest split, because it matters heading into heating season.

Book service soon if you notice: the furnace taking several attempts to ignite, rooms heating unevenly, longer run times for the same result, or a new squeal or rattle from the blower.

Stop and call right away — don't keep running the system — if you notice:
-Any smell of gas
-A carbon monoxide alarm that has sounded, even once
-Visible soot or scorching around the burner area
-A burner flame that's yellow and flickering instead of steady blue
-Water pooling at the base of the unit

That second list isn't a maintenance conversation. Gas appliances in Alberta are regulated and inspected for exactly these reasons.

And while you're thinking about it — test your CO alarms this week. Press the button. Check the date on the back; most units expire after 7–10 years and need replacing entirely, not just new batteries.
