I looked after the many removals and larger pruning jobs at the University of Alberta Botanical Gardens for many years. It's a bit of a commute these days, but lots of fond memories. Such a beautiful place, and I am grateful for the time.
There is hardly an arborist out there with such a diverse and specialized portfolio, certainly none as gnarly 😊.

Pollarding is a long-term, cyclical pruning technique involving the removal of upper branches of young trees (usually 2–3 meters high) to create a dense head of foliage. It controls size in urban landscapes, prevents damage to infrastructure, and historically provided fodder or wood. Once started, trees must be repollarded annually.

In forestry, an undercut (also known as a notch or face cut) is one of the two fundamental cuts used in felling, with the second being the "back cut."

A business, an undercut is a competitive pricing strategy where a company sets prices lower than its competitors to win market share, attract customers, or clear inventory.

With skills to pay the bills, the Gnarly Arborist undercuts the competition because I can.

Why prune?

Here are 8 great reasons.

Pruning trees is essential for enhancing their health, structural integrity, and safety by removing dead, diseased, or hazardous branches.

Proper pruning encourages stronger growth, increases fruit production, and allows sunlight and air to reach the inner canopy, which reduces pest and disease risks.

What is black knot?

Black knot (Apiosporina morbosa) is a widespread fungal disease that primarily affects trees and shrubs in the Prunus genus, including plums, cherries, apricots, and chokecherries. It is characterized by rough, black, coal-like swellings (galls) that grow along the branches and can eventually girdle and kill them.

The most effective way to control black knot is through pruning and sanitation.

When to Prune: Late fall to early spring (ideally while the tree is dormant) is best because galls are easier to see and spores are inactive.

How to Prune: Cut at least 6 to 10 inches (15–25 cm) below the visible knot to ensure all internal fungal threads are removed.

Sterilization: Disinfect tools between every cut with a bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water) or 70% rubbing alcohol to prevent further spread.

Disposal: Do not compost infected wood. Bag and dispose of it in regular waste, or burn it immediately.

Fungicides: These are generally used as a preventative measure on high-value trees and must be applied in early spring before bud break.

I am getting ready to see these beauties again.
Pollarded trees like these are an incredible rarity in our neck of the woods and a great honour to take care of.
I am into high value ornamentals as much as the big gnarly removals.

Gnarly,
Joe
