It's Bloodroot season! These double flowered Sanguinaria canadensis are native to North America and are an excellent food source for early pollinators.

It was an entirely unpleasant day for outdoor work today, so I took myself for an uplifting stroll through Jill Jensen Botanicals to browse their selection and start making some notes for the upcoming tropical planters season. The smell of Camellia and Jasmine wafting through the greenhouse air was the perfect antidote to the miserable rain and wind outside. Bring on Spring (please!!!). I also found a cool Hibiscus flower that reminds me of a tropical island drink that probably has rum in it...

It's almost the end of October, and this year some gardens just don't want to quit! Today we put to bed a long-time client's garden that I love because even when all the annuals are gone there is still lots happening in the foundation planting. It's hard to believe I planted this garden almost 15 years ago (that weeping beech was lifted into its hole in by hand!)

We finally got our personal landscaping project completed! We started at the end of last summer by deconstructing the old pool and craning the (smaller) new black fiberglass pool into the hole with the help of Durham Fibreglass Pools. Brad spent many hours this summer doing all the stonework and fencing, then we finally got the planting done last weekend. Judging from the snow we got mid-week, our timing was good.

Some of my favourite gardens this week. The Hydrangeas continue to impress, the Black Eyed Susans are in full swing, and the Hibuscus moscheutos are spectacular!

I've had a lot of questions lately about Japanese Beetles. They are a fairly recent pest here in the Oshawa area. I started noticing them about 5 years ago and they are particularly bad this summer. They eat many plants, but are found most frequently in our clients' gardens on Climbing Hydrangeas, Roses, and as pictured here on Sweet Potato Vines. Our favourite means of control is to allow them to drop into a bucket of soapy water. Daily control is recommended when possible. Damage to the plants is not nice to look at, but the plant will recover and be fine next year. Severely affected leaves can be removed.
