Red Jewel Napa F1

Our fall trial of this deep purple-red Chinese napa cabbage.

Cooler fall nights brought out an even deeper purple than our spring heads, and the cold tends to make napa a little sweeter as well. The barrel-shaped heads are purple through to the centre, great raw in salads or cooked in Asian dishes. Rich in anthocyanin, which provides antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Bolt-tolerant and suited to sowing from late spring through fall, with heads typically weighing 2–3 pounds.

Transplanted August 18 and ready in about 60 days, right in line with our spring trial.

Beautiful Loose-Curd Chinese Cauliflower - Song 60-2 F1 (松花菜) !

This cauliflower variety is mature ~60 days after transplanting in the fall season. It feautures loose florets with light green and long stems making for a crispy and sweet cauliflower variety.

This is ideal for fall season planting, it builds a strong plant in the warmth, then forms its curd as the nights cool. That slower finish is what gives its long stems that sweet flavour and crisp texture. In some areas, it’s also suitable for planting in late spring and summer.

Five weeks after transplant, some of our cabbage trial varieties are starting to head.

We transplanted these on August 18. Heading is when the inner leaves begin to fold in and form the head, and it's one of the first signs of how a variety will perform. We're seeing a range across the trial: some varieties are well into forming heads, and others are still open and leafy.

These differences in timing are part of what we track in our trials, so growers can choose varieties that fit their season and market.

🌶️ CHECK OUT THESE CHINESE LONG CAYENNE PEPPERS 🌶️

Sichuan Long F1 - the classic. Super long, very hot and aromatic, with a glossy dark green fruit that ripens bright red. 10–12" x 1/2" pods, early at 60–65 days from transplant. Disease resistant and productive.

La Mei Zi F1 - same length and heat, but with a fine wrinkled skin that gives the pods a distinctive finish. Also 10–12" x 1/2" and early at 60–65 days from transplant. Disease resistant and productive.

WHATS HAPPENING AT THE TRIAL FARM? FALL TIME 🍂

The corn is has come down. We flail mowed the stalks and worked the ground so the field is ready for next season.

Out in the rows, the pepper trials are still producing, and this month we pulled samples from each line to lay out side by side.

Same with the tomatoes and the squash. Every variety gets a close look for size, colour, shape and consistency!

🍈 DEEP DARK GREEN WINTER MELON - WAX BOY F1

The colour is what sets this one apart: a rich, dark green rind that holds up beautifully in the field. Inside, dense white flesh with a small seed cavity.

This one was 18.7 lbs at 98 days from transplant. The white wax coating develops as it matures and helps the melon store longer.

🍅 Tomato Highlight - Honey Pearl F1

This golden tomato brings ultra-sweet, low-acid flavour in a bright, uniform 15–18 g fruit; firm-skinned, crack tolerant, and built to hold up in snack packs and mixed clamshells.

Vigorous indeterminate vines set heavy trusses all season, and they handle the heat very well.

Red Jewel F1 — A striking purple/red Chinese napa cabbage.

The barrel-shaped head has a vibrant purple exterior and interior and is excellent for salads and Asian dishes. Rich in anthocyanin, offering antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Tolerant to bolting, ideal for sowing from late spring through fall. The heads are typically 2–3 pounds.

Transplanted May 4 in our spring trial; heads were ready 65 days later, the first week of July.
