“Housing is a Human Right. Build it”

Smoke Architecture is fortunate to be involved in so many housing undertakings that will provide housing for those who need it. We feel lucky to be involved in designing dignified, safe and accessible spaces that will one day become someone’s home. We do not take this lightly so we are always learning and educating ourselves on designing living spaces that are functional and efficient. We commit ourselves to always advocating for and supporting housing undertakings as we know how much of a difference a safe home makes for everyone.

Today we honour National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We reflect on the significance of today and continue to commit to listening, learning and education. Our thoughts and hearts will always be with the survivors, intergenerational survivors, and their families, communities, and nations. We remember and honour the children who did not come home.

If you’d like to take action and know more, please consider today’s significance:

Excited to share some renderings from our latest project for Atura Power!

Smoke Architecture was contracted by Atura Power to design the Operations and Maintenance Building for the Napanee Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), located alongside the existing Napanee Generating Station in Greater Napanee, Ontario. The building supports the operation and maintenance of the battery storage facility, bringing together a large warehouse with adjoining office, meeting, and staff spaces. The project provided an opportunity to bring a considered architectural approach to a highly functional and technical building type.

The design moves beyond a typical industrial facility to create a building grounded in the history and character of the site. Inspired by the longhouse, the building’s elongated form and parabolic curved roof unify the warehouse and administrative spaces. The warehouse utilizes the familiar form of a Quonset structure, drawing from the agricultural and utilitarian buildings of the surrounding landscape. Exposed glulam structure brings warmth and a natural material expression to the office areas, creating a dialogue between the building’s Indigenous design influences, agricultural context, and contemporary industrial use.

Through its form, structure, materiality, and relationship to the landscape, the project creates a contemporary energy facility that acknowledges the layered histories of the land.

This week we want to highlight the Curve Lake First Nation to design a Museum and Repository. We are currently working on the study alongside Innovation 7 and Mantecon Partners.

The goal of this project is to aid in preservation and promotion of the culture, heritage, and history of the First Nation community. The new building will include a workshop for programming, a teaching kitchen and harvesting room, as well as an archaeological lab, digitizing lab and recording studio. The new design features upgraded staff facilities, including plenty of office space, a staff room and meeting area. Most importantly, the building includes ample artifact storage to securely house sacred artifacts.

Happy Indigenous History Month 🧡

We are excited to celebrate and recognize the vibrant and resilient culture of all First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. The history of our peoples remains at the core of our design and drives the work we do everyday.

This month we would like to take the time to highlight some of our projects designed for Indigenous community members.

First up is Brantford Native Housings Multi Unit Residential Building. SAI was commissioned by BNH to design this dignified and affordable multi-unit building. The apartment will consist of 3 floors with 18 units, which include four 2-bedrooms and fourteen 1-bedroom, four of which are barrier-free. The apartment complex also includes a large meeting room adjacent to a large outdoor space and medicinal garden for larger community gatherings, ceremonies and community programming, and a communal laundry facility. Natural materials were also prioritized for the exterior facade and interior finishes to create comfortable and welcoming public and residential spaces.
