How can we help landscapes thrive?

By supporting the ecosystems around us.

🌱 Plant native species
🐝 Support pollinators
🌳 Protect mature trees
🌾 Reduce habitat fragmentation

Small actions, when connected across communities, can make a lasting difference.

Some landscapes hold more than trees. They hold stories. 🌱

Oak Savannas once shaped much of southern Ontario. Today, less than 1% remain.

Their restoration is about supporting native grasses, wildflowers, pollinators, birds, and wildlife

The Niagara Escarpment is more than a landscape: it's a living system.

Every forest, stream, wetland, and waterfall is connected through the way water moves across the land.

Protecting it isn't about controlling nature. It's about restoring the natural processes that have sustained it for thousands of years.

The future of resilient design begins when we choose to work with nature, not against it.

The strongest landscapes don't resist water, they guide it.

By restoring wetlands, protecting forests, and designing with natural systems, we can build communities that are more resilient for generations to come.
Protecting the Niagara Escarpment isn't about working against natural processes. It's about designing with them.

The best infrastructure has been here all along. 🌿💧

For thousands of years, rain filtered slowly through forests and wetlands, nourishing streams and groundwater along the way.

As cities grew, that journey changed. Roads, rooftops, and storm sewers now move water faster than nature intended, increasing erosion and placing greater pressure on ecosystems.

Protecting our landscapes isn't only about managing water. It's about restoring the natural processes that have sustained them for generations.

Tropos takes its name from the troposphere, the lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere, where weather forms, water vapour circulates, and life flourishes.

It also comes from the Greek word tropos, meaning "to turn" or "to change," reflecting the belief that landscapes are never static. They evolve over time through natural processes, human stewardship, and thoughtful design.

Understanding these cycles of change allows us to create landscapes that are more resilient, ecological, and deeply connected to the places they belong.

What if one of Hamilton's first landscape architecture projects wasn't designed on paper—but by nature and generations of stewardship?

Long before roads and cities, the Oak Savanna functioned as living infrastructure. It provided food, medicine, clean water, wildlife habitat, and natural materials while supporting a resilient landscape.

Today, many of the principles that guided these ecosystems continue to inspire landscape architecture. By learning from the past, we can design healthier, more resilient communities for the future.

Sometimes, the best blueprint has been here all along.

Some of the most valuable lessons for the future come from landscapes that have endured for thousands of years.

By studying how resilient ecosystems functioned, we can learn to design with nature, not against it and create healthier, more sustainable landscapes for generations to come.

Long before Hamilton became a city, much of the lower landscape was an Oak Savanna—an ecosystem of open grasslands, native species, and scattered Oak trees.

Managed by Indigenous communities for generations, these landscapes played an important ecological and cultural role in the region. As urbanization and agriculture expanded, much of this ecosystem disappeared.

Today, Hamilton's oldest Oaks offer a glimpse into that history, acting as living reminders of the landscapes that once defined the region. 🌳
