Erica Patterson has been with the QEII Halifax Infirmary Expansion Project since day one as a carpentry apprentice. She's studying for her Red Seal Exam and plans to write in the upcoming months.

A proud mom from Upper Hammonds Plains, Erica began her carpentry career in 2020. She says helping build a new acute care tower that will serve Nova Scotians for generations is one of the most rewarding parts of her work.

Her message to women considering a career in the skilled trades: "Just do it. Take the chance to be part of something legendary. Being a woman on a site doesn't make you less of a tradesperson. You are treated as equally important."

🧡 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Today, we honour Residential School Survivors, their families and communities, and remember the children who never returned home.

As an industry that helps build the communities and spaces Canadians call home, we recognize that building a better future means more than physical structures. It means building relationships based on respect, understanding, and reconciliation.

On September 30, we pause to listen, learn, remember, and reflect on the ongoing journey toward reconciliation.

The Respectful Workplaces Working Group is seeking input from construction industry stakeholders across Nova Scotia.

If you’re a construction employer, owner, manager, supervisor, safety professional, industry association, or labour representative, consider completing the survey.

Your feedback will help the working group better understand current workplace practices, challenges, resource needs and opportunities across the sector, while helping shape practical, construction-specific tools and resources for more respectful workplaces.

Nova Scotia's construction industry has come together to establish the Respectful Workplaces Working Group, a collaborative, industry-led initiative focused on strengthening workplace culture across the sector.

Bringing together employers, workers, industry associations, labour representatives and other partners, the group will work to identify priorities, share best practices, learn from lived experiences, and better understand the challenges, needs and opportunities facing the industry.

The initiative aims to build on existing efforts already underway across the sector while helping identify practical resources, tools and opportunities that support safe and respectful workplaces.
