📢 We are now in Aix-les-bains for the International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission alongside 24 other Dragonflyers teammates (and 4,500 breast cancer survivors from around the world!)

It is extraordinarily beautiful here and while the event runs from Aug 24 - 30, the first few days are settling in and team practices (for 170 teams!) before Opening Ceremony on Thursday, and then the races begin on Friday & Saturday.

Today we had a chance to explore the nearby city of Annecy, France after Dave finished his supporters team practice.

Yes, Dave has opted in to his very own dragon boat team — there is an opportunity for supporters to join in their own teams and participate in separate races. His team includes 4 Canadians (family and spouses of other Dragonflyers), 2 Americans, and 16 people from Manchester to make up the Pink Albions (team # S11)

The Dragonflyers are team # 91, and you can view livestream videos of some of the IBCPC events (and learn more about the schedule) here - https://live.ibcpcfrance2026.com/

We're competing in two 500-metre races (on Friday) and two 200-metre races (on Saturday) : the Dragonflyers are scheduled for:

- Friday, 11:26 am local time

- Friday, 14:26 local time

- Saturday, 10:56 am local time

- Saturday, 13:26 local time

***Note: Aix-les-bains local time is 6 hours ahead of EST.

The Eiffel Tower, Arc de triomphe and the Louvre all in one day. Paris’ public transit is easy to navigate with the tube or bus, but you miss the little things above ground, so we walk!

On our way to the Eiffel tower, we found this unique water feature, that worked as a fence, for privacy and a relaxing space for the participants on the inside. The iron fence is grass inspired, the simple masses of ornamental grasses are planted on both sides of the fence, softening the lines. Careful use of specimens and mass plantings provide privacy and shade to those relaxing on the deck. The water is no more than 24” deep so the fish are up close and personal as they eat the algae. Although this one is bigger than most by our residential standards, a water features don’t need to be big, or deep. They need to be intentional and fill your space with purpose. This one was a welcome respite after a long day on foot.

A full day of walking and sightseeing. Notre Dame was first, and from the inside, there is little to suggest the fire in 2019. The apse, nave, rose windows and smaller chapels are awe inspiring. We love the ingenuity and engineering of the flying buttresses on the exterior, and the vaulted arches. We were able to sit in front of the alter, in silent prayer and reflection. I am grateful for such a wonderful life after cancer, and for those I am privileged to share my life with, be it family, friend or client. Dave and I truly are blessed! Not going to lie . . I may have snuck in a short prayer for strength, speed and good friends in our upcoming races!

Further down the Seine is the Louvre. We entered through a covered arch, into Napoleon’s courtyard and WOW! The Medici family built the Louvre and it has been added onto numerous times with the most notable being the glass pyramids in the front.

The Arc de Triomphe gave us pause. There is flame, at the tomb of the unknown solider under the Arc, that has been lit since the mid 1920’s. We love the master planning and arrangement of the city overall and it comes together with the Arc. Standing in the middle of the Arc, in the far distance, is the middle of the Louvre. The other end of that same access is purported to be the Palace of Versailles.

The last of the day was reserved for the Eiffel Tower. Dave loves building, engineering and figuring out how things are made. We spent a lot of time staring at bolts, and metal plates, but the structure truly is beautiful.

Stop #1 - The gardens at Versailles; Classical French Renaissance landscape design at its best! The formality, use of line, and the scale is incredible both inside and out.

Both the palace and the Grand Canal are built around the same primary axis, allowing the landscape to be part of the indoors.

The Orangerie, takes container gardening to a different level with boxed of tropical citrus, palms, oleander (and more) so they can be moved inside during the winter, and outside during the growing season.

The knot gardens are elaborate formal designs, but are made up of only five or six plants (and sadly yes, we see signs of boxwood moth here too)

The statues, the use of water and the use of scale (how the scale of the space increases for grandeur and shrinks to create a smaller, around the corner is incredible! We spent a whole day here - bucket list checked!
