Project throwback!

Our team completed the Wilson Street Parkade also known as the Market Street Parkade, and the accompanying pedestrian bridge back in 2019. It's been cool to see this project become a key element of our downtown Guelph Landscape.

Is your city about to spend millions on a new parking structure?

Before taxpayers accept the headline number, they should be able to ask a few simple questions.

Did the city compare all reasonable construction methods?

Does the budget include long-term maintenance, or just the cost to build?

What is the cost per parking stall?

How efficient is the layout?

Was the project tendered in a way that lets different systems compete fairly?

A parking structure is public infrastructure.

It has to deal with snow, salt, water, freeze-thaw cycles, vehicle traffic, repairs, and decades of use.

So the conversation should not stop at, “How much will it cost to build?”

The better question is, “How much will it cost to own?”

We were excited to have MPP Joseph Racinsky () and Mayor Cam Guthrie () along with Councillors Klassen and Bussuttil at our head office location this morning to celebrate the expansion of our operations.

The visit announced the support from the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade (MEDJCT) into Kiwi Newton and our mission "To provide high-quality, affordable, and sustainable construction at scale."

We are actively investing in making construction more productive with our Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and Off-Site prefabrication of our building systems.

We are involved in a lot of parking structure projects.

And unfortunately, we see the same common mistakes again and again.

Most of them come from early decisions that seem harmless at the time, but have a big impact on the design, planning, construction, and cost.

We aren't blaming anyone. Most people are not involved in parking structure construction every day.

Planners, designers, project managers, and stakeholders might only ever work on one parking structure project in their whole career.
