We're all set up in a new warehouse and back to pumping gas! The R12 is pumped from the single-use tanks to a large refrigerant reclaim tank for safer storage. We pull the single-use tank down to a vacuum to make sure we've captured all of the R12, then we unhook the empty tank, normalize the pressure, and drill holes into the tank so it's ready to be sent to a local metal recycler.

If you've got old tanks of R12, R500 or R502 collecting dust, we'll buy them. Free pickup or shipping. Get in touch for ...

We buy R12 from all over Canada, and most of the time the gas was manufactured right here at home. But we sometimes encounter tanks that were produced outside of Canada. This one was manufactured in Monterrey, Mexico, by Cydsa.

R12 came in a variety of tanks, and we've seen quite a few over the years. Here's a lineup of 30lb single use jugs. If you've got any of these sitting around in storage, we'd like to buy it. Send us a pic of the tank on a bathroom scale to confirm weight.

TARE WEIGHTS

In order to figure out the net weight of the refrigerant in your tank, you'll need to know the tare weight (TW), which is the weight of the tank when it is empty.

Here's a quick summary of the TWs for some of the refrigerant tanks we commonly see:

SINGLE USE 30lb TANK
TARE WEIGHT ~ 5lbs
The most common tank we see is a 30lb single use refrigerant tank. They're called 'single use' because they are not intended to be refilled, and newer versions of the tank have a stop valve to prevent refilling. These tanks often have "30lb / 13.6kg" on the label, indicating that they contain 30lbs of refrigerant when new. The TW on these tanks is 5lbs.

SINGLE USE 50lb TANK
TARE WEIGHT ~ 9lbs
These are less common, but very similar to the 30lb version. These single use tanks have a tare weight of 9 lbs.

AUTOMOTIVE 30lb TANK
TARE WEIGHT ~15.5lbs
These tanks are usually branded "AC Delco" or "Ford Motor Co.", and have a sturdier construction and high collar. They hold 30lbs of R12 when full. These tanks are reusable and refillable, and unlike the single use tanks, they have the Tare Weight stamped on the collar, in the following format: "TW - 15.5lbs". Typical TWs for these tanks is in the range of 15-16 lbs.

HEAVY 30lb REFILLABLE TANK
TARE WEIGHT~ 18lbs+
Similar to the reusable automotive tanks, these also hold 30lbs of R12, but have slightly heavier construction, and therefore a larger TW. We're not sure if these tanks were specific to an industry, or more of a general purpose reusable tank (if anyone knows, leave a comment, thanks). The TW is stamped on the collar of each tank.
