☀️ Not every roof has one obvious place to put solar. This one has two planes facing different directions, which raises a real question: does the array go on one side, or does it make sense to use both?

Roofs like this are more common than people think, and the answer isn't the same every time. Sometimes one plane is clearly the better choice. Other times, splitting the array across both actually gets more total production out of the roof. The only way to know is having both sides properly assessed rather than defaulting to whichever side looks easiest.

If your roof has more than one facing direction, it's worth asking your installer whether they evaluated both sides individually.

Here's the part worth understanding: even a properly designed system, with zero shading issues, is never going to produce as much in December as it does in June. That's not a flaw, it's physics, shorter days and a lower sun angle limit winter generation no matter how good the design is. This is exactly where net metering matters. Your summer surplus doesn't just disappear, it's banked as a credit and carried forward for up to 12 months, so the extra energy your system sends back to the grid in June is still working for you when generation naturally drops in December.

A few questions worth asking whoever designs your system:

☀️ Has shading been modelled at winter sun angles, not just in summer?
🌳 Are there trees, chimneys, or nearby rooflines that could cast long shadows once the sun drops to its lowest point of the year?
📊 Can they show you a month-by-month production estimate, not just an annual average, so you can see how the system is expected to perform in December specifically?
🔋 Is the system sized with net metering's 12-month credit cycle in mind, so summer surplus is actually being put to use rather than wasted?

The summer photo sells itself. The winter numbers tell the truth. Net metering is what closes the gap.

Vents, skylights, chimneys, and dormers all change the layout of a system, but they don't automatically rule solar out. A careful design can often work around them and still get a fully functional system on a tighter or more complex roof.

If you've been told your property isn't a fit, it's worth asking specifically why, and whether other layout options were actually considered.

🏡The climate is changing. Shouldn't your new home be built to handle it?

When Grason Homes came to us for this model home, the goal wasn't just "add solar panels." It was to build in protection against three real, everyday risks: rising electricity costs, grid outages, and the growing demand of EV charging, all without blowing the budget, and without the equipment looking bolted on.

Here's what that meant in practice:

⚡ Rising costs: solar sized to offset a meaningful share of the home's electricity use, so utility rate increases hit a lot softer over time.

🔌 Grid outages: battery backup built in from day one, so losing power doesn't mean losing the fridge, the furnace, or the ability to work from home.

🚗 EV charging: the system was designed with EV charging load in mind from the start, not added on later as an afterthought once the panel's already maxed out.

🎨 Built in, not bolted on: because this is a new build, we were able to design the whole system to sit flush with the home's walls, so it reads as part of the house rather than equipment stuck onto it after the fact.

For anyone building new right now, this is the real advantage: retrofitting solar, battery, and EV charging into an existing home means working around what's already there. Building it in from the start means every piece, the panel, the wiring, the battery placement, gets designed for the home, not squeezed into it.

A big part of why this worked is Grason Homes. Not every builder thinks this far ahead for their future homeowners. Backup power should start with a simple question: what do you want to keep running during an outage, and for how long?

That answer helps guide the entire system design.

With thoughtful planning, we designed this system to provide 27 kWh of total battery storage for the homeowner, using a Tesla Powerwall paired with a DC Expansion Pack to extend backup capacity for essential loads during an outage.
