Hey y’all 🌻

The growing season is finally here which means the busy season is here too! We are still getting seedlings transplanted and will be finishing up planting the direct-seeded crops this week.

Some tips for transplanting: make sure the seedlings are well-watered before planting, plant out on an overcast day, and give them a good water after. If you are planting any brassicas - cover with netting or row cover right away (flea beetles are out this time of year).

We try to w**d every 10-15 days in June and July. Use a hoe (stirrup hoe, collinear, any kind!) to disturb the soil surface when the w**ds are small (cotyledon stage). By getting at the w**ds early, it is much easier than waiting too long and having to hand pull them.

There is always lots of work to do in the garden this time of year, but try to take a few moments to be present and truly enjoy the peace that the garden brings 🌷

It’s finally feeling like spring! The snow is melting, the robins have returned and the sun is shining.

May is another busy month for starting seeds and prepping the garden. I usually start my pumpkins, squash, and cucumbers in the first week of May. They grow fairly quickly and are not transplanted out until early June.

Don’t forget to harden off your seedlings before transplanting! Start by putting them out for a few hours a day in a sheltered area and then gradually increase the time they are outside. This process usually takes 1-2 weeks.

Some vegetables can be direct seeded later this month, but pay attention to soil temperature (see my post on soil temperature from last year).

Some cool-weather plants can be transplanted out later this month as well, but I like to wait until June to put out warm-weather plants that need the consistent warmer night time temperatures.

Happy Gardening 🌻

I’m late posting our April tasks but the weather lately has been making me feel less than motivated 😅

It’s not too late to start peppers and tomatoes - especially considering they may be planted out a bit later this year.

I’ll be starting my brassicas in the next week or so, along with some green onions from seed.

I like to test all hoses, sprinklers and drip lines before we install the irrigation systems - it’s better to repair or replace parts before your system is set up in the garden!

Since we still have lots of snow, there is still time to check your garden plans and order any seeds or supplies you may need!

Unbox our order with me!

This is just a fraction of our seeds for the year, but there are some fun ones in there!

WDS also has the best seed starting mix… in my opinion anyways 😉

March is here! We are getting closer to having our hands in the dirt. Although, it is hard to believe that spring is near with our current weather (blowing snow and -20).

As each month begins, we are starting more and more seeds. I usually start my tomatoes and peppers in the second half of March and into April. Now is a good time to double check your seed inventory to make sure you have everything you need, as there is still time to order or buy seeds. Also make sure that you have enough seed starting supplies because there is nothing worse than going to start your seeds and running out of soil, ask me how I know 😉

IF you can get to your garden shed and tools, now is a good time to start organizing and cleaning. April is usually busy with other outside chores, so I try to do whatever I can now so there is less to do as it warms up.

What is on your gardening to-do list this month?
