This summer, the Pioneer Construction team has been hard at work on MR 35, completing road rehabilitation to help improve the safety, quality and longevity of this important route.

From preparing the roadway by milling and pulverizing to completing the paving work, our crews are working diligently to deliver a smoother, more durable road for everyone who travels MR 35.

A big thank you to our crews for their hard work and to motorists for their patience while work was underway.

This year marks an important step forward for road construction in Greater Sudbury as the City begins early trials of asphalt mixes designed using the SUPERPAVE methodology.
For decades, asphalt mixes in our region have been designed using Marshall Design procedures. SUPERPAVE (Superior Performing Asphalt Pavements) takes pavement design a step further by tailoring asphalt mixes to the traffic demands they will face throughout their service life.

What does that mean?
✅ Roads carrying higher volumes of heavy truck traffic can be designed with aggregate blends containing more crushed stone and fines, helping improve durability and resistance to rutting.
✅ Asphalt binders are selected based on the temperature extremes experienced in our region. Here in Sudbury, we commonly use PG 64-34 asphalt cement, engineered to maintain its performance characteristics in temperatures ranging from +64°C to -34°C.
✅ The result is a more data-driven approach to pavement design that helps create longer-lasting roads capable of standing up to Northern Ontario's challenging climate and traffic conditions.
