Most tank terminal personnel are responsible for operating cathodic protection systems, but rarely receive formal training on how those systems actually work or what early warning signs to watch for in monthly readings.
The other week I had the opportunity to travel to Miami to deliver two cathodic protection presentations at an annual operations and engineering meeting for a Caribbean fuel storage terminal operator.
The first session focused on understanding corrosion at a practical level, along with the day-to-day operation of tank bottom CP systems. We discussed preventative maintenance, monthly rectifier readings, and some of the common warning signs terminal personnel can look for before small issues develop into larger integrity concerns.
The second session was geared toward engineering and project teams, and focused on tank bottom ICCP system design considerations including material selection, installation practices, and the importance of backfill quality in overall system performance.
I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be invited to speak and contribute to discussions around protecting critical fuel storage infrastructure in the region.
TruCorr Inc. is always here to support tank terminal CP operations through annual surveys, system assessments, preventative maintenance guidance, or technical training for operations and integrity personnel.
If your team would be interested in a similar presentation or discussion around the operation or design of cathodic protection systems for aboveground storage tanks, I would be happy to connect.
