I think a lot of us would pay just about anything for another ordinary morning at Grandma’s house.

Nothing special planned. Just sitting at her kitchen table, listening to her putter around, with nowhere else we needed to be.

Only now, we’d have a few more questions.

How did you make that? When do you plant those? Can you show me before you put it away?

So much of what we’re trying to learn now was just part of their everyday lives. And while we can’t go back, we can still learn and give our own kids and grandkids memories of making things alongside us.

That’s a big part of why I’ve been putting together the Ultimate Yardsteading Collection. There are so many people still practising these skills who are happy to share what they know. I want to learn from them too.

It opens October 22. Comment LEARN and I’ll send you the waitlist link so you’ll hear from me when it’s ready. 🤍

If you had another week at your grandma’s house, what would you ask her to teach you?

I will store this for 20 years if that’s what it takes to find it a home. But you mark my words. I will cook with this stove in my lifetime. And I will cook with it often. I am so in love!!

Massive thank you to my friends who thought of me when it came to finding this beauty a home!

The plan is to eventually put it in a cabin. When that will happen, I do not know lol.

Well, the cat’s out of the bag!! 🎉

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from sharing all these forgotten skills lately, it’s that I’m not the only one who wishes they’d learned a few more things from their grandparents.

And that’s really what got me thinking about putting this collection together.

There are SO many incredibly knowledgeable people out there teaching things that used to be common knowledge. Growing food, preserving it, raising animals, building things, making things from scratch… the list goes on.

So I thought, why not bring a whole bunch of them together and make it easier (and a heck of a lot more affordable) for people like you and me to learn from them?!

And that’s exactly what I’ve spent the last few months doing!

✨ The Ultimate Yardsteading Collection is officially coming October 22!

I’ve partnered with 46+ educators and creators to bring you over $1,250 worth of courses, guides, recipes, building plans and more, all for just $50.

You’ll have an entire YEAR to learn at your own pace, but the collection itself will only be available to purchase for 10 days, October 22 through November 1.

Whether you’re starting your very first garden or you’ve been at this for years, I think you’re going to find something in here worth learning.

I’m so excited to finally share this with you. And I really hope it’s something that helps a few more of these skills find their way into the next generation. ❤️

One of the biggest decisions you’ll make BEFORE you ever start building a greenhouse is what you’re actually going to build it out of.

And there isn’t one right answer.

Where you live matters. Your budget matters. The size of your greenhouse matters. How much moisture the material will be exposed to matters. And how long you expect the thing to stand there definitely matters. 😂

For us, pressure-treated lumber made a lot of sense.

We’re building in Northern Alberta. We get snow, rain, huge temperature swings and plenty of freeze/thaw cycles. Then we’re intentionally creating a humid environment INSIDE the structure.

So we chose MicroPro Sienna PLUS treated lumber for this build.

If a greenhouse build is on your someday list, don’t forget we’re currently giving away our complete passive solar greenhouse plans + $800 CAD from MicroPro Sienna toward lumber for your own build. ✨

Some of my favourite things on our property started with “we could probably build that.” 😂

These five projects have given us more space to grow food, brought chickens into our backyard, kept our kids busy for hours, and given Eric and I a place to sneak away with our morning coffee.

They’re useful builds, but they’ve also made being home that much better (like so much better that we never leave haha). ✨

If the greenhouse or chicken coop or anything else catches your eye, we’ve turned those builds into step-by-step DIY guides so you can build one too.

Which would you build first? Tell me below 👇

How many YESes did you get? 👀

There was a time when knowing how to grow food, preserve a harvest, make things from scratch, work with your hands, and use what you had wasn’t considered “homesteading.”

It was just living.

We don’t need to go backwards, give up modern conveniences, or know how to do everything ourselves.

But I do think there’s something incredibly valuable about reclaiming some of these skills.

Knowing how to make something instead of buying it.

Grow something instead of relying entirely on the store.

Preserve something for later.

Fix, build, forage, raise, create.

Not because we have to.

Because there’s a lot of freedom in knowing we could if we needed to.

If this made you realize there are a few more things you’d love to learn, I put together a free list of 30 Forgotten Skills Worth Learning Again.

Comment SKILLS and I’ll send it to you.

And tell me your score out of 10 👇

Posted this spontaneously today on my stories and decided I may as well commit and post it for all.

So, hey. I’m Carolynne 👋

I’m the owner and founder of Hillside Market, and for the most part, the person behind all of it.

I’m the one dreaming up the projects, building them, photographing them, turning them into guides, making the content, writing the emails, designing the things and then trying to figure out how the hell to tell the internet about them. 😂

For a long time, I think I’ve been much more comfortable letting the things I create be the face of this business.

The pretty greenhouses. The gardens. The projects. The photos. The curated little squares on Instagram.

But I don’t really want to hide behind the pretty pictures anymore.

Because somewhere along the way, this became about a hell of a lot more to me than building nice things in the backyard.

I care deeply about where our food comes from.

I care about people knowing how to grow something, preserve something, build something and feed themselves.

I care about our local farmers and producers actually being able to make a living doing what they do.

I care about people going to the farmers’ market and buying the garlic powder from the person who grew the damn garlic instead of automatically reaching for the one on the grocery store shelf.

I care about using the yards we already have to grow more food, plant more flowers, create habitat and put a little more LIFE back into the world around us.

And I care about preserving skills that we are losing way too fu***ng quickly.

And I think I’m finally ready to talk about it more.

I’ve been (not so patiently) waiting to share this!✨

This summer we took on our biggest greenhouse build yet: a 12’ x 24’ passive solar greenhouse designed for our Northern Alberta climate.

And now that the build is finished and the DIY plans are almost ready, we wanted to do something REALLY fun to celebrate.

So we teamed up with MicroPro Sienna to help one of you get started on your own greenhouse build.

We’re giving away:

✨ Our complete 12’ x 24’ Passive Solar Greenhouse DIY Building Guide
✨ $800 CAD from MicroPro Sienna toward the lumber for your build

MicroPro Sienna PLUS treated lumber was a big part of this project because if there’s one environment where I want to be thinking about moisture and longevity from the very beginning... it’s a greenhouse.

And now one of you gets a pretty darn good head start on building your own.
