Fun Fact Friday 🐜

Ever wonder how ants all seem to follow the exact same path? It’s because they leave behind invisible chemical trails called pheromones. When one ant finds food, it lays down a scent trail on the way back, guiding the rest of the colony straight to the source.

The more ants that follow, the stronger that trail becomes. Basically turning it into a busy “ant highway.”

That’s why wiping away visible ants isn’t always enough, the pheromone trail can still remain, guiding more ants to the same spot.

Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know that pharaoh ants often show up indoors when outdoor conditions don’t meet their needs? Their nests can be right under a home or building. Because the nest is warmed by the building, it can keep the colony active year-round or “wake them up” earlier than you’d expect.

Their natural food sources outside aren’t available until usually late spring, which is why they move indoors to find food. They’re not just drawn to “messy” spaces. Even the cleanest homes can attract them, because they’re after tiny crumbs, moisture, or even microscopic food residue you wouldn’t notice.

What makes them tricky is their ability to split into multiple colonies if disturbed. This process is called budding which can actually make an infestation spread faster if not handled properly.

So if you’re suddenly seeing more of them, it’s not about cleanliness, it’s about opportunity.

🐜 Fun Fact Friday!

Carpenter ants don’t actually eat wood! Instead, they tunnel through it to create smooth, hollow galleries for their colony, almost like natural woodworking.

As they chew, they push out little piles of sawdust-like material (called “frass”), though it’s not always visible, since it’s often hidden inside walls or ceilings.

They prefer wood that’s already softened or damaged by moisture as it’s easier for them to create their tunnels. They usually highlight a preexisting problem more than they cause it.

🦟 Fun Fact Friday

Did you know that all ant species produce winged ants during their reproductive season? It’s part of their life cycle.

These winged ants (called swarmers) are the reproductive members of the colony. They leave the nest to mate. Then the fertilized queens drop their wings and start new colonies, while the males die shortly after.

Which means “ants with wings” alone isn’t enough to identify a species.

Not sure what you’re seeing? Send us a photo, we’re always happy to help identify for you.
