Aidan joined Southwest Surveys in the spring of 2022, immediately after graduating from UNB’s Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering program.
He was also the company’s very first employee.
At the time, Southwest Surveys was still operating from Joey’s home. Hiring Aidan meant expanding from the basement into the garage to make room for a second desk. Since then, both Aidan and the company have grown considerably.
Today, Aidan serves as Southwest Surveys’ Survey Operations Supervisor. He helps oversee the day-to-day work of our field crews, including scheduling, project planning, equipment coordination, logistics and project ex*****on. He also provides technical guidance to the team and supports projects through both the field and office stages.
Clients may see Aidan leading work on a construction site, completing a boundary or topographic survey, coordinating with contractors and other project professionals, or working behind the scenes on calculations, drafting, data processing and quality control. That ability to work comfortably in both environments is one of Aidan’s greatest strengths. Aidan is equally strong in the office and in the field. He understands not only how to collect the information, but also how it will be used to produce the final result.
Aidan is particularly skilled in construction surveying. On complex projects, surveyors are often responsible for bringing together drawings prepared by several different disciplines and translating them into one coordinated layout on the ground. Architectural, structural, civil and mechanical drawings do not always align perfectly, and discovering those conflicts after construction begins can be costly.
Aidan has developed a keen eye for identifying inconsistencies and potential problems before they reach that point.
He is very good at looking at the entire project, recognizing when something does not fit, and asking the right questions before it becomes an issue on site. That ability provides real value to our clients and the contractors we work with.
Aidan’s interest in surveying began while he was attending Harvey High School, after a presentation from UNB introduced him to the Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering program.
“I liked math, the outdoors and mapping, so surveying seemed to bring a lot of my interests together.”
Before joining Southwest Surveys, Aidan gained field experience in both construction and legal surveying through positions in Ontario and Yellowknife. He also worked as a teaching and research assistant at UNB, competed with the university’s cross-country and track and field teams, and earned several academic and athletic awards. His references described him as punctual, reliable, capable, motivated and willing to take on difficult work—qualities that remain evident today.
Aidan is currently articling toward both his professional land surveyor and professional engineer designations. His favourite parts of the profession reflect the range of work he enjoys.
“Finding old boundary evidence that is difficult to uncover is very rewarding. I also enjoy taking a new construction design from paper and laying it out in the field.”
Beyond his technical abilities, Aidan is a kind, dependable and exceptionally well-rounded young man. He approaches his work with humility, strong morals and integrity, and he can always be counted on to do the right thing.
Outside of work, Aidan enjoys running and travelling.
From Southwest Surveys’ first employee working from a desk in the garage to a leadership role within a growing team, Aidan has been an important part of the company’s story. We are extremely proud of the professional he has become and look forward to watching the next stage of his career unfold.
