Straw bales are now in stock at McMurray Landscape Center for $24.99 each.

For gardeners, straw can be used as a loose insulating layer over dormant strawberry plants, bulbs and certain perennials. The purpose is not to keep the plants warm and growing. It helps keep the soil temperature more consistent, reducing the repeated freezing and thawing that can lift shallow crowns and roots out of the ground.

This is one fall garden job that should not be rushed. Wait until the plants are dormant and the soil has begun to freeze before adding winter straw. Applying it too early can delay dormancy and keep the soil warmer than intended.

In spring, pull the straw back as the soil thaws and new growth begins.

And yes, straw and hay are different. Straw is generally preferred for garden mulch because it normally contains fewer seeds than hay, although no agricultural bale should be assumed to be completely seed-free.

Quantities are limited, so contact us before making a special trip if you need several bales.

Fort McMurray still looks like fall, which makes this a much better time to check your snow-removal tools than the morning after the first heavy snowfall.

Pull your shovel and ice scraper out of storage and take a quick look:

• Is the shovel blade cracked or badly worn?
• Is the handle loose, split or damaged?
• Is the scraper edge bent or worn down?

If something did not survive last winter, replacing it now means it will be ready when the weather changes.

The first winter supplies have started arriving at McMurray Landscape Center, including snow shovels, ice scrapers and 50-pound bags of Stealth Blue ice melter. Additional winter products will be introduced as they arrive.

Contact us before making a special trip if you need a particular product or quantity.

10/10/2026

Concrete pavers can have slight differences in colour from one piece or production bundle to another. That variation is a natural characteristic of the materials and manufacturing process, not necessarily a problem with the product.

The problem becomes more noticeable when an installer completes one entire pallet before opening the next. Any difference between the pallets can appear as a distinct patch or band across the finished project.

Barkman recommends pulling pavers or slabs randomly from multiple bundles during installation. This distributes the natural colour variation throughout the project and creates a more consistent finished appearance.

Before installation begins, inspect the product and confirm that the colour is correct. Once that is done, open multiple pallets and blend from them as the project moves forward.

Contact McMurray Landscape Center to discuss current Barkman options for your project.

10/09/2026

Freshly delivered topsoil is loose because it has been moved, loaded and spread. That loose material contains air spaces between the soil particles.

As water moves through the soil, the particles rearrange and some of those spaces become smaller. The soil level you see immediately after spreading may therefore be higher than the finished level you see later.

That does not mean every load should be heavily compacted. Soil used beneath a hard surface and soil intended for growing plants have different jobs. Excessively compacting a growing layer reduces the pore space needed for air, water and root development.

When estimating topsoil, work from the finished depth the project needs—not only how the material looks immediately after it is spread.

Tell McMurray Landscape Center whether you are filling a low area, preparing for seed or sod, or building a planting bed. The intended use affects the material and quantity you should consider.

This may look like a wood-plank walkway, but every piece is concrete.

Barkman Concrete Bridgewood Slabs are textured from actual wood planks, creating the warmth and character of wood without a surface that will rot or warp.

The slabs come in three lengths, which can be combined to create a more natural-looking pattern for patios, walkways and other pedestrian areas. Currently available in Cedar Brown and Weathered Grey colours.
