Wikewiku’s (October) is Mi’kmaw History Month.
As an Indigenous owned company, Radium North recognizes the importance of celebrating this important month as many of our employees are of Mi’kmaq background.
Mi’kmaw History Month is a time to commemorate the rich history, proud culture and important contributions of the Mi’kmaq people across Mi’kma’ki. The month-long celebrations start with Treaty Day on October 1st, which recognizes the key role of treaties in the relationship between the Mi’kmaq people and the Crown.
Mi’kmaq people have occupied their traditional territory, Mi’kma’ki, since time immemorial. Mi’kmaq are among the original inhabitants of the Atlantic region in Canada and is made up of seven districts: Unama’kik aq Ktaqmkuk, Eskikewa’kik, Sipekni’katik, Epekwitk aq Piktuk, Kespukwitk, Siknikt and Kespek.Today, Mi’kma’ki is home to 30 Mi’kmaq nations, 29 of which are located in Canada - the Aroostook Micmac Band of Presque Isle, Maine, has more than 1,200 members.
Like other Indigenous peoples in Eastern Canada, Mi’kmaq practiced and continue to practice art intrinsically linked to the natural world. This is done through painting, quillwork, beading, and music.
