Despite the on-and-off rain these past two days, nothing was going to stop this determined group of volunteers from finishing the first stage of this magnificent Root Cellar build. I am grateful for the experience. πŸ™

Last night, Lauren, myself, and my new apprentice, Maddox, were all invited for supper, and to light the first official fire on my latest outdoor fireplace project. It was such an honour to be included with the homeowners and their friends and neighbours for this momentous and special occasion. I'm happy to report that the chimney drew the smoke perfectly, and the traditional radiant firebox did an excellent job projecting the heat forward. It couldn't have worked any better.

I want to thank my beautiful wife, Lauren, for always encouraging and supporting me, and I want to thank the homeowners, Heidi and Kevin - not only for giving me the creative freedom to build this special project, but they were also two of the most gracious and generous clients I have ever done work for. And thanks also to Maddox. This was his first ever job in masonry and he did a fantastic job! I feel truly blessed by this entire experience. Thank you, God.

Today was my first day on the second day of this dry-stack Root Cellar build here at Love's Sweetness Maple Syrup Farm in Holstein, Ontario - the first of its kind in Canada. I'm currently sitting under my tent in a thunderstorm hoping that my hammock stays dry throughout the night. Time will tell.

So far, it's been an honour to join this talented, hard-working group of about 20 volunteers, all brought together, some as far as Ashville, North Carolina, thanks to Master Stone Mason Dean McLellan StoneWork. Despite the numbers, I was able to spend a lot of quality time laying stone into the wall and learning from the absolute best.

Stay tuned for more.
