It's almost here!!!!! ☀️☀️☀️ With the nicer weather coming, comes people inquiring about roofing jobs. While I have lots of experience in roofing, it is not one of Love Contracting's regular services. But with that being said I would like to offer some free advice to ya'll as I am very tired of watching clients pay roofers to do a job that is s**t. Then I follow along and have to clean up their messes. So I would like to offer some tips and suggestions for what to look out for in your roofing contractor.
In regards to getting a steel roof:
* We live in Grey County, and if the last two winters have proven anything, we are back to getting the harsh winters most of us grew up and remember. So it is VERY IMPORTANT TO DEMAND that your roofer installs snow guards on your new steel roof. IT IS NOT MY JOB AS AN ALUMINUM PERSON TO INSTALL THEM AFTER THE FACT. DEMAND THAT THEY ARE INSTALLED DURING YOUR ROOFING INSTALLATION. I cannot express the importance of snow guards enough as I cannot guarantee your eavestroughs without them!
* If your roofer is going over your existing shingles with steel it is NECESSARY for your roof to be strapped. It is also necessary for the roofer to remove the existing shingles drip edges along the entire perimeter. If they do not, and just go over top you are asking for nothing but trouble. And if I am coming in afterwards to do aluminum it will make my job and my life a living hell and I will curse them out the entire job, and I will be charging more as it makes my job so much more difficult.
* PROPER DRIP EDGES ARE NECESSSARY. Without proper steel drip edges along the perimeter of your roof, water has entry points and will not shed properly. Again IT IS NOT MY RESPONSIBILTY OR JOB TO INSTALL THEM AFTER THE FACT!! If your roofer tells you that you do not need them, they are lazy f***s.
* You need ventilation in your steel roof. Having vented soffit is not enough, a vented ridge will help with air flow in your attic and decrease the risks of ice damning. Ensure you are getting ventilation of some sort.
*Mennonite steel is cheaper, and there is 100% a reason for that. It is thinner and no where near as durable. People are going to come after me for that, but I have witnessed how flimsy and easily damaged Mennonite steel gets with harsh weather. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.
*Mennonites install roofing for way cheaper because they get away without having to do ANY of the business aspects that the regular person has to. Without WSIB, insurance, business licenses etc. Again, you will get what you pay for, they half ass the job. I follow behind them all the time and see it on every job they touch.
IN REGARDS TO SHINGLE ROOFS
* Never and I mean NEVER go over layers of shingles. It may be cheaper now, but it will not be in the long run. You are increasing your chances of rot, you are leaving unnecessary weight on your roof, and it is just bad practice.
* Again, I cannot express the importance of proper drip edges. It is also necessary for shingles to OVERHANG the drip edge. If the shingles are installed flush, water will not shed properly and it will NOT go into your eavestroughs. And that is not a me issue. It is a roofer, lazy f**k issue.
* If you have a home that experiences a lot of ice damning ensure that another layer of ice and water is added. Yes, only 1 row is required. But again, with the ice and snow we get in Grey County it doesn't hurt to have an extra layer for added protection.
The more you know, the better chances you have of spending your money on a roof that will last and work properly. If your roofer shows up missing all of their teeth in a rotted truck, guaranteed you will have no warranty, and they will be doing drugs while on your job. Tailgate warranties are no good, and it is not my responsibility to clean up after them. If the price seems too good to be true, there is a reason. I hope this information helps as I am extremely exhausted with following behind such terrible workmanship all the time. I am available for questions during reasonable working hours.
