Delaporte Garden Glass Friends and Family, I know you haven't had a post in a while then today there is a flurry of them. I just wanted to state that beauty of perennials is not just found in their blooms, but can be found in the changes caused by the cold weather and frosts. Here is an example of a deep green Hosta changing over to yellow . Of course it helps to be shrouded in the falling yellow - white pine needles that are so beautiful at this time of the year. , ,

Delaporte Garden Glass Friends and Family, the last few potted plants are still showing some beauty and it is hard to say good by to them. However the potted plants can add to your garden when you are done with them. When the weather says, hard frost are coming, then it is time to start cleaning up. The potted annuals can have their pro - mix cleaned out of the plants roots and pot. This can be added to the garden, and in the garden pictured the provided an excellent medium to plant a new selection of bulbs in a new garden on the side of my yard. Don't forget to give your pots a good cleaning and store them in a dry location for next year. , ,

Delaporte Garden Glass Friends and Family, sorry I have not posted, but there is a great deal of work to be done at this time of the year. Fall clean up includes remedial pruning and shaping of trees and bushes. The dead wood needs to be pruned along with any branches that cross each other, interferes, or impedes with other plants growth. I choose to burn the branches on the site of my garden returning the ashes into the soil. The ashes help to improve the soil and provide nutrients for next year's garden. I rototill the ashes into the soil to evenly mix them. Then next year I will test the soils PH and add lime if necessary. , ,

Hello Delaporte Garden Glass Friends and Family. Even though it is getting cooler when the sun shines the garden and especially the glass is spectacular. Now the the plants are starting to die back the garden glass sculptures seem to grow and glow, basking in the sunlight. The late blooms are beautiful. The bees are going mad collecting as much pollen as they can before the inevitable winter months arrive. The clematis's last blooms are so wonderful - almost majestic in their beauty, and they leave beautiful seed clusters as if to say hey it is not over until these get planted. Yikes Frosts are here at Delaporte Garden Glass. Hi everyone, yes its officially FALL. The leaves are turning and starting to come off the trees the flowers are waning a clean up has begun. The hoses are coming in and the potted plants are going in the compost pile. I recycle the potting soil (so I get two bangs for my buck) into the garden. The veggie garden fencing has been taken down - only the carrots and beets are still in the ground. Even with all the work, it is a lovely time of the year. , ,

Hello Delaporte garden Glass Friends and Family! Lets talk about Calla Lilies. They are wonderful as potted plants: they have beautiful blooms. and then lovely foliage after they bloom. At this time of the year they need to be lifted out of the potting medium, rinsed off and dried for a period of time to let their roots dry up. I find that blasting each bulb with the hose removes any old skin or rotting last years growth. Then they need to be dried and then stored in a cool dry dark place. I use a recycling bin with vermiculite and bulb dust covered by a towel and stored in the basement. Seeds can also be collected from the pollinated flowers, separated and dried. The seeds can be saved or potted to grow inside over the winter. At this time it is nice to see something thriving inside and over the winter months ahead. , ,
