Its cooling down in the Valley, and kids are returning to school. Its time to consider hiring some help with your outdoor fall/winter preparations. Here are some important tasks to prepare your home, outdoor garden, deck, and patios for winter:
Clean Up Debris:
Remove all dead plant material, fallen leaves, and debris from your garden beds, deck, and patios. This prevents pests and diseases from overwintering and reduces the risk of mold and mildew forming in damp conditions.
Inspect and Maintain Structures:
Check decks, patios, and garden structures for any damage or wear. Repair any loose boards, railings, or furniture.
Clean and treat wooden decks with a water repellent or sealant to protect against moisture and extend the life of the wood.
Ensure that drainage around patios and decks is working properly to avoid ice buildup which can be hazardous.
Protect Plants and Trees:
Mulch: Apply a thick layer of mulch around perennials, trees, and shrubs to insulate the soil and protect roots from freezing temperatures.
Wrapping: Wrap the trunks of young trees or those with thin bark to prevent sunscald and frost cracks. Use burlap or tree wrap for this purpose.
Potted Plants: Move potted plants to a sheltered location or indoors if they are not hardy. For those left outside, consider wrapping pots in bubble wrap or sinking them into the ground to protect roots from freezing.
Drain and Store Garden Equipment:
Empty and store hoses, sprinklers, and any other water-holding equipment to prevent them from cracking due to freezing water.
Clean and oil garden tools to prevent rust, and store them in a dry place.
Winterize Water Features and Irrigation Systems:
Turn off and drain irrigation systems to avoid damage from freezing water.
These steps will help ensure that your outdoor spaces are well-protected against the harsh conditions of winter, making spring rejuvenation much easier and more effective.
