Winter is when many Edmonton basements finally get finished. It’s too cold for yard projects, and the space downstairs starts looking like unused square footage.

Most people don’t plan for what happens before the drywall goes up. We rough in outlets, lighting, and any new circuits first, then get them inspected. The same goes for drain and water lines if the plan includes a bathroom or wet bar. Once the walls close, changing your mind gets expensive.

Cabinet doors that don't line up are something you stop noticing after a while, right up until someone comes over and you see all of them at once.

It's usually a hinge that's worked loose, a screw stripped out of soft particleboard, or a door that's dropped because the cabinet itself shifted. All fixable, and most of it is an adjustment rather than a replacement.

Sorry to be the ones bringing this up in September.

Snow is heavy. A deck carrying a winter's worth of it is holding considerably more weight than it does in July, and that's when a post that's gone soft at the base or a joist hanger that's pulled loose turns into an actual problem instead of a future one.

Worth a look while everything's still dry. Push on the railings. Check where the posts meet the ground for soft or spongy wood. Get underneath and look for anything sagging, rusted, or pulling away from the ledger board where the deck meets the house.

If something feels off, it's a much smaller job now than after the first real dump.

A question we get more than you'd expect: do you subcontract any of this out?

No. Everyone who turns up at your door works here.

When the work is in-house, the person doing the job answers to the same people who quoted it, so there's no gap between what you were told and what happens on site. And if something needs sorting out afterward, you're calling us, not chasing down whoever we hired.

It's also the reason we can say the quality stays consistent. We're not rolling the dice on who happens to be free that week.

Five worth handling before the snow:

🚪 Weatherstripping on exterior doors. If you can see daylight around the frame, you're heating the yard.

🍂 Gutters and downspouts. Clogged gutters are what turn into ice damming once the melt and freeze cycle starts.

🪟 Caulking around windows and exterior trim. It shrinks and cracks over a summer, and that gap is where the draft comes from.

🪜 Loose railings and steps. A wobbly handrail is a different situation once there's ice on it.

🔨 Anything that needs a ladder. Far easier now than in December on an icy driveway.

They're quick on their own, and quicker again when they all get done in one trip.

A closet door off its track is one of those things you just live with. You lift it, you shove it, you get it about eighty percent closed and you carry on with your day for a year.

It's usually a worn roller, a bent track, or a top track that's pulled away from the header. Simple stuff, just fiddly, and it goes much faster when someone turns up with the right rollers already in the van instead of making three trips to the hardware store.

These things travel in packs too. If the closet door's off, odds are there's a cabinet hinge, a sticking bedroom door and a towel bar hanging by one screw waiting their turn.

Some jobs get much harder once the ground freezes. These are the ones to focus on for the next few weeks.

- Gutters and downspouts, cleared once the leaves are down and pointed away from the foundation
- Weatherstripping and door sweeps on any door you can see daylight under
- Exterior caulking around windows and trim, while it's still warm enough to cure
- Fence posts and gates, before the ground hardens
- Loose railings and steps, ahead of the ice

Most houses have a drawer that only closes if you put your hip into it. We can fix it!

It's usually the slides. The rollers wear down, or a screw backs out, and the drawer sits a few millimetres off level. Sometimes there's a utensil behind the drawer box, and you won't see it until the whole drawer comes out.

It's a small job either way. It stays broken for years because nobody wants to give up a Saturday for it.
