Calgary Housing has started construction on Southview, a multi-phase development that is expected to house more than 1,000 Calgarians when both phases are complete.

Phase 1 is planned as a mid-rise development with 250 homes in one-, two-, three-, and four-bedroom layouts. Calgary Housing says the first phase will serve more than 600 residents, with 10 per cent of units designed as barrier-free and buildings that exceed NECB 2020 requirements.

For the AEC sector, Southview is a relevant local example of housing delivery that combines building design, accessibility, energy performance, site planning, and proximity to transit and community amenities.

Sustainable infrastructure becomes easier to support when it improves everyday life instead of only asking people to accept restrictions. CopenHill captures that thinking by combining energy infrastructure with recreation. Environmental performance and public enjoyment do not have to compete.

What piece of infrastructure would you redesign to give it a second public use?

A floor crack like this in a school can look serious fast, especially when it runs through occupied classroom space. Our Ontario lead completed a structural assessment of the second-storey floor crack and reviewed the surrounding structural conditions. The assessment considered the precast concrete floor system, load-bearing masonry walls, steel beam support, and the way different structural elements came together in this area.

CVL found that the crack had formed between two precast floor panels, likely due to differential movement where an expansion joint may have been better suited. While the crack looked alarming from above, the building was found to be structurally stable and adequate for its intended use. CVL recommended repairing the gap, continuing regular monitoring, and completing follow-up engineering reviews to track any further movement.

Before and after of Syapru beshi, one of the affected areas of today's flash flooding in Nepal.

At least 95 people have been killed in Nepal, and hundreds of tourists are missing, after a massive flash flood and mudslide on the Nepal-Tibet border.

Construction is underway on the International Cargo Hub at Edmonton International Airport, a project aimed at expanding airfield infrastructure and improving supply-chain capacity.

The cargo hub is funded through the National Trade Corridors Fund and is intended to reduce infrastructure constraints that limit cargo growth at YEG. It will also support more efficient movement of goods between Canadian, U.S., and international markets.

In most cities, putting a gas station on top of a building would sound like a mistake.

In Chongqing, China, it actually makes a bit more sense. The city is built on steep hills, so one road can meet the bottom of a building while another road meets the roof. That is how you end up with a gas station sitting on top of a multi-storey structure, but still connected directly to the road.

From an engineering and planning point of view, it is a pretty interesting use of limited space. Instead of treating the building and road as separate things, the city uses different levels of terrain to make them work together.

But it also shows the tradeoffs of building in dense cities. It can look efficient and clever, but it also raises obvious questions about safety, access, traffic, ventilation, fire protection, and how comfortable people feel living or working around something like that.

Concrete aprons can take a beating when drainage and groundwater are working against them. This exterior concrete apron at Shell Arena in Sherwood Park was experiencing heaving and settling issues. We were brought in to design a replacement apron that could better handle the site conditions. The existing slab-on-grade was being affected by poor drainage and groundwater infiltration, so the new design needed more support than a typical concrete pad.

The new apron design used screw piles to provide structural support below the concrete. The drawings also included concrete reinforcement, excavation requirements, granular material notes, helical pile foundation requirements, and coordination items for the contractor. Our team also noted that site drainage should be addressed separately to help reduce future damage from freeze-thaw cycles, erosion, and excessive water.
