The North Calgary Water Servicing project is moving forward with up to $29 million in federal funding and a $94 million contribution from the City of Calgary.

Stage 1 includes about 7 kilometres of new feeder main, part of the 22 kilometres planned for Phase 1. The work also includes upgrades to the Top Hill and Big Hill East reservoirs and the Mountain View Pump Station. Once complete, the project is expected to deliver an additional 30 million litres of water per day to pressure zones in north Calgary.

For municipal and water infrastructure teams, this is the kind of project that makes growth possible. Feeder mains, reservoirs, and pumping capacity determine where new housing can go, and building redundancy into the system helps keep water service reliable when individual pipes or facilities need repair.

A new playground at the Harry Jerome community centre in North Vancouver was built from pre-engineered log and net play structures. Before it could open, the structures needed a structural review and sign-off from a BC-registered engineer.

CVL reviewed the installation package against CSA Z614, the Canadian standard for playspaces and equipment, and provided stamped drawings. Our team then completed field reviews during installation, covering the concrete piers, post embedment and connections. With installation complete, we issued the Schedule S-C assurance of field review and compliance to close out the permit.

The federal government has introduced Bill C-39, the Building Canada Strong Act, legislation aimed at changing how major projects move through federal approvals.

The bill would require federal reviews and decisions to be completed within one year of a comprehensive application. It also proposes formally designating strategic trade corridors, creating a transportation project office to coordinate federal permitting, and modernizing port governance. Alongside these changes, the government plans to add 100 new health and safety officers. The Major Projects Office has received 27 project referrals since September 2025, representing about $200 billion in investment.

Approval timelines shape when design, procurement, and construction can actually begin. The bill still has to move through Parliament, but if passed, faster and more predictable federal reviews could change how quickly transportation, port, and energy projects reach the engineering and construction stages.

A homeowner in Leduc had installed two prefabricated wood gazebos on an existing backyard deck and wanted to confirm the deck could carry them. CVL was brought in to review both the gazebos and the deck framing below them.

The gazebo roofs were rated above the roof load required for Leduc, so the gazebos themselves were fine. The weak point was the deck, where the joists under each gazebo post were not sized for that concentrated load. We recommended adding two 2x8s to each of those joists to form a triple 2x8 under every post, with a detail the builder could follow.
