A valuable lesson for homeowners - a real case from a job in progress. A client's proactive approach to addressing a mold issue led to the discovery of a hidden defect behind a wall, which was promptly rectified. The client had purchased the home three years ago and first noticed mold in a closet last year. This year, they contacted Sharp Finish Construction Inc. to investigate. Our initial assessment revealed heat loss into the exterior wall, prompting us to open the wall to identify the root cause. We found rigid styrofoam insulation without a v***r barrier, which doesn't meet current building codes. We recommended removing the drywall and installing a proper v***r barrier system, which the client agreed to. Once the walls were fully opened, we discovered the real issue: insulation glued directly over old drywall, with black mold covering the drywall behind it, posing a significant health risk. We swiftly removed the contaminated drywall, old insulation, and rebuilt the wall correctly, safely, and to code. The project is now nearing completion, with the wall rebuilt with new insulation, a v***r barrier, and drywall. The key takeaway: when buying a home, it's essential to hire a registered professional home inspector to uncover potential hidden defects, ensuring a safe and healthy living space.
