Here's a piece of hardware we're glad to be fitting, and the reason why.

On an out-swing door, the lock is rarely the part that gives. It's the seam down the edge of the door, where a thin tool can reach the latch without touching the cylinder, and the door opens with barely a mark on it.

FinBlock closes that seam and holds when the door is pried.

It was built by a journeyman locksmith who kept seeing that same failure turn up on the install side. Designed, built and finished in Edmonton by JCL Industries. Canadian-made and supported here, so there's no waiting on something to clear a border.

It fits out-swing doors, single or double, and goes over most of the hardware already on the door.

More often than not, the call about a roll shutter comes after something's already happened.

A door forced overnight, a bent frame, and someone trying to piece together how they got in.

And it's usually not the door anyone was worried about. It's the quiet one at the side or the back that nobody thinks about twice.

Even when they don't get in, it still costs you.
Hardware to replace, a frame to straighten, and someone out there before the building opens.

Roll shutters get priced one door at a time, and it's usually the front.

Worth asking yourself which of your other doors would be the easy one tonight.

She caught them and answered each one straight.

This door didn't get broken into. It just got tired. 🚪

No gap at the top, a half-inch at the floor. Looks like someone forced it. But the top hinges were wearing out, letting the door sag and sink into the frame, and the building shifting with the season did the rest.

The fix is simple: new hinges, a few shims, and the gaps evened back out.

A door that opens slowly or sticks reads like a dying operator.

Fair guess; it's the obvious suspect. But in our experience, the cause is often something around it, not the operator itself.

An operator is the last part of a system.
The hinges, the threshold, the weatherstripping and the latch all have to move freely.
When one starts to drag, the operator leans into that resistance on every cycle, and that steady strain is what ages it.

A busy stretch piles on.
The more an entrance gets used, the faster a small issue wears through, so what might take a year to surface can show up in a busy month instead.
A little dust on a sensor, and the door starts opening for no one, or pausing on someone right in front of it.

Sometimes it is the operator. Often it's not.
You only find out once someone looks at the whole opening, which is what we do.

Here's the part that got us about yesterday morning we had a blast at the Coffee with Chambers, hosted by Edmonton Chamber of Commerce at

Nobody at that table came to talk about doors.

A hotel, a building owner, a shop owner, someone who runs events.
Completely different worlds. And the moment Holly said what she does, every one of them had a question they'd been sitting on.

That's what's worth noticing. These aren't people hunting for a contractor. They're people who've been quietly living with something in their building and never had anyone to ask.

It usually comes out half apologetic too, like it's a silly question. NO, it NEVER is. And more often than not, the fix is smaller than they're expecting.

So if there's something in your building you've stopped noticing because it's always been that way, ask someone. Might as well be us. 😎

Mogy finished his afternoon rounds and came back with a verdict: we have an opening for a licensed locksmith.

He's our Head of Supervision. He runs the place from the forklift seat, inspects everything, approves almost nothing. And there's one gap on the crew he refuses to let slide.

We're hiring a Journeyman Locksmith.

You'd be working on commercial doors, locks and hardware across Greater Edmonton, with a crew that does the job properly and a manager who will supervise you closely from whatever warm surface is nearest.

Bars, film, shutters. Only one closes the whole opening.

If you run a storefront, you've probably weighed all three.

🪟 Security film holds the glass together in a smash-and-grab. It buys time, it isn't a barrier.
🔩 Bars and grilles block entry, but not broken glass, and they close off the look.
🛡️ Roll shutters cover the whole opening after hours. A full physical barrier.

Each does part of the job. Film buys time, bars block entry, a shutter closes the whole thing off.

How much barrier you need comes down to the opening and the risk, so secure that first, then decide the rest.

A door that swings open when you lean on it isn't a door. It's a suggestion.

We found this one on a parkade walkthrough. Closed, latched, looked completely ordinary. Then one hand against it was all it took, and it flexed and pushed right open. Turns out it's the original door from when the building went up, and the years have not been kind. There's barely anything left holding it together.

Closed or not, a door like this keeps no one out, which in a parkade is pretty much the entire point.

A door like this is past fixing. It needs replacing with one that holds, and that's something we can help with.
