Before the Edmonton ground freezes up for the winter, there’s one quick 5-second test every homeowner should run on their turf.

Push a standard 6-inch screwdriver directly into your grass:
If it slides in easily: Your soil has good structure and space for air, water, and late-season root growth.
If you hit a brick wall after an inch or two: Your soil is heavily compacted.

Why this matters heading into fall:
Heavy foot traffic and high clay content pack soil tight over the summer. When soil is compacted, fall rain and spring snowmelt can’t pe*****te down to the root zone, it just pools on top or runs off. That leaves your grass dehydrated while creating a prime environment for surface rot and snow mold.

If your soil fails the test, mark those high-traffic spots for a good core aeration come spring so your lawn can breathe again!

Deep watering through late September prevents roots from entering winter dehydrated—which is a leading cause of winterkill and desiccation. Once you've given your lawn its final deep soak, unhook garden hoses and shut off your exterior water valves before freezing nights catch you off guard.

Seeing "liquid aeration" ads pop up everywhere? Can a spray bottle really replace pulling real cores? Let’s break it down! As we head into fall, a lot of homeowners ask us if liquid aeration products can save them from having to aerate mechanically.

Here’s the breakdown:
Liquid Aeration (Surface Level)
These products act as heavy-duty soil conditioners and wetting agents. They break down surface tension so water pe*****tes hard topsoil easier.
Best for: Improving water absorption and softening the top layer.

Mechanical Core Aeration (Structural Change)
Pulling physical 2-to-3-inch plugs of soil creates actual open channels straight to the root system.
Best for: Relieving heavy Edmonton clay compaction, breaking up thatch, and letting air, water, and nutrients reach deep roots before winter.

The Verdict: Both have a place! Liquid products help with water flow on the surface, but they can’t physically move dense, packed soil. To truly relieve compaction and give roots breathing room, pulling real plugs is still king.

Our phones have been ringing off the hook with homeowners worried about sudden dead spots. Late summer heat brings out chinch bugs, but not every yellow patch is an infestation. Many are just heat-stressed turf needing water.

Here is how to tell the difference before you give us a call:
Dry Grass vs. Chinch Bugs
Just Dry: Thirst-stressed turf stays localized and bounces back to a rich green after a couple of deep soakings.
Chinch Bug Damage: These pests inject a toxin while feeding that prevents grass from absorbing water. The damage keeps spreading outwards even if you pour water on it, starting in hot, sunny areas near driveways or sidewalks.

The 5-Minute "Tin Can Test"
Want to know for sure before scheduling a service call?
Grab an empty tin can and cut both the top and bottom lids off.
Push the can about 2 inches deep into the soil at the outer edge of the yellow patch (where green meets yellow).
Fill it with soapy water and wait 5 to 10 minutes.
If you have chinch bugs, they’ll float right to the top!

Notice w**ds creeping in along your driveway, curb, or patio edges? Here’s what’s actually happening!

It’s easy to blame bad luck or missed spots, but perimeter w**ds are usually caused by a classic "Drown & Fill" cycle. When heavy rain or irrigation runs off hard surfaces, water pools right along the concrete border.

Here’s how the cycle works:
Pooled Water at the Edge: Water collects against hardscapes and can’t drain away quickly.
Grass Thins and Drowns: Turfgrass roots need oxygen to survive. Standing water displaces soil oxygen, causing root rot and thinning out the grass.
Opportunistic W**ds Move In: W**d seeds thrive in low-oxygen, wet, open spaces. As soon as the grass dies back, w**ds jump at the fresh real estate.

How to break the cycle:
Core Aeration: Opens up compacted edge soil so water can drain down instead of sitting on top.
Check Sprinkler Angles: Make sure heads aren't over-saturating hard edge borders.
Watch the Trimmer: Avoid scalping along concrete edges, which weakens the grass further.
