Before entering a trench, it's important to ask yourself:

- Can I get out?
- Is the edge controlled?
- Has the trench been inspected?

A safe trench needs more than a locate. Workers need safe access and ability to egress, spoil piles must be kept back from the edge, water must be controlled, and loose material must be scaled or trimmed.
