Pollarding is a distinctive pruning system where a tree’s upper branches are cut back to the same point annually or biennially to restrict height and promote a dense head of new foliage.
The repeated cutting creates a swollen, knot-like structure called a pollard head (or knuckle).
It is used primarily for:
