Short answer: yes, they can. Tree roots naturally grow toward moisture, and the soil around your foundation tends to hold it.

Over time, roots can press against concrete, work into existing cracks, or dry out the soil enough that the ground shifts underneath the slab. Old stumps left in the ground keep sending out roots, too, even after the tree is gone.

If you've got a stump close to your house, garage, or driveway, grinding it down stops the root system from spreading further.

If you've only got one stump in your yard, here's a tip from Grant. Ask around the block. Chances are, at least one of your neighbours has a stump they've been meaning to deal with, too.

When we can grind a few stumps in one trip down the street, the cost per stump drops for everyone. Travel time and setup are a big part of any small job, so grouping a few properties together makes a difference in the final price.

Yes, you can plant in the same spot, but the soil needs a little help first!

After grinding, the area is left with wood chips that draw nitrogen from the soil as they break down. For grass or smaller plants, mix in fresh topsoil and compost before seeding or planting. For a new tree, dig a few feet to the side of the old stump for the best results.
