"Design can be a powerful tool for good." — Mariam Kamara

A visit to the Art Gallery of Alberta is always good for the soul. And right now, two rooms specifically are a good reminder of why we do what we do.

In 'Plans and Prototypes' (pictured here), kids can sketch, build, and test their own designs and models: learning that design is the critical first step in the building process. In 'Wallflower', the exhibit turns inward: exploring the spaces wallpaper envelops and how the parts of a room we stop noticing are often doing the most work. Two rooms. Both making the case for good design in different ways.

Design isn't just how a space looks. It's how it performs. That's the idea behind everything we do at Archive, whether we're inside or out. That's what drives the work we do.

Good design isn't decoration. It's a tool. We just happen to build with it.

The weather's done a pretty good job lately of reminding us that some projects run on their own schedule. The planning doesn't have to.

It's Father's Day on Sunday (again, you're welcome) and we celebrate every person who holds that role. Forget the tie. Give Dad something better than a gift: one less thing on the to-do list.

A good father figure and a well-built home have more in common than you'd think:

🔨 Work that holds up over time.
🔨 A protective structure between the world outside and everything that matters inside.

Edmonton, we see you. With localized rainfall totals well above Alberta’s typical June average, this week has pushed our roads and properties to the limit.

Water intrusion isn't just an inconvenience…it's a building science problem. Your home's building envelope either handles it, or it doesn't. The rain has tapered off, but now is the critical time to check your basement foundation walls, lot grading and window and exterior door perimeters for moisture. If your building envelope is compromised, water will find a way in.

If you're seeing water where you shouldn't be, don't wait. Moisture problems compound quickly. 💧

What does it mean when a home truly reflects the person who built it? This book navigates just that for author, Shelley Klein who grew up in the Scottish Borders in a modernist, open-plan home (designed by architect Peter Womersley) for her father, celebrated textile designer, Bernat Klein.

The 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 was the result of a fusion between art, architecture and design, where detail was of utmost importance.
The 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 is an insightful exploration of the influence of a domestic setting on mind, spirit, and identity.
The 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 remains a beautiful reminder that great design outlasts trends, holds memory, and tells the story of who we are.
