This week’s Employee Highlight features Justin Sedgwick with 5 years of industry experience and a Class 3 Well Technician License. As a certified Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) member, Justin plays an important role in maintaining strong safety standards both in the shop and in the field.
Justin's experience includes mud rotary and auger-based applications, limited access drilling, and direct push operations — bringing versatility and dedication to every project they support.

Today, we pause to honour the Survivors of Canada’s Residential School system, and to remember the children who never made it home.
At Pontil Drilling Services, we acknowledge with respect that we work and operate on the traditional territories covered by the Williams Treaties, home to the Mississaugas and Chippewas of the Anishinaabeg. We recognize the enduring presence, knowledge, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples across these lands.

This achievement belongs to our entire team.

You've heard us say it before, but we'll say it again and shout it from the rooftop, health and safety is our number one priority no questions asked. Ashley is our Health, Safety, and Environmental Coordinator and we are incredibly lucky to have her! There aren't many people as dedicated to their craft as she is.

We take pride in our drillers being well informed and to help teach our clients junior to senior the geotechnical/ environmental drilling trade!

The name that needs no introduction. If you've ever worked with Pontil Drilling, you likely know the name and the voice, Bruce Whyte.

Ten years ago this week, Bruce joined the Pontil family and in that decade, he's become so much more than a colleague. He's a mentor, a friend and the professional our clients trust.

His steady hands and steadier heart have shaped this company in ways numbers can't capture.

To bridge the skill gap between new and experienced operators, Pontil started an industry leading Operator Training Program in 2020.

After 18 months, and approximately 3000 hours on a drill site, a Driller’s Assistant can enter the program via a Training Request Permit that must go through a senior management approval committee.

The candidate then spends hundreds of hours operating under the guidance of our knowledgeable senior drillers. Once the new driller clears their training, they maintain Junior Driller status for 18 months ensuring they cannot directly supervise a Junior Assistant.

By the time a junior driller reaches standard driller status he/she has logged approximately 6000 hours

Lance is one of lead trainers in our operator training program.

SAFETY MONTH - WEEK 2 - Line of Fire, Pinch Points & Body Positioning

Focus: Hands Clear. Body Clear. Drill Safe.

This week's focus is on recognizing situations where workers could be struck, caught, crushed, pinched or otherwise injured by moving equipment, tooling, materials or stored energy. Drilling operations create constantly changing Line of Fire hazards, making worker positioning, communication and awareness critical. Employees will be encouraged to stop and consider not only where equipment is currently located, but where it could move if something shifts, releases, swings, rolls, falls or fails.

Key areas of focus: pinch and crush points; rotating drill components; rod and casing handling; suspended loads; equipment swing and travel areas; stored energy; unsecured or shifting materials; vehicle and equipment blind spots; safe hand placement; maintaining exclusion zones; communication between Drillers and Helpers; and choosing safe body positioning before beginning a task.

Key Message: Before you put your hands or body somewhere, ask: “If this moves, where will it go—and am I in the way?” Hands clear. Body clear. Drill safe
