🔨 Geotechnical history: in 1902, C.R. Gow drove a 1-inch sampler into the ground with a 110-lb weight because he wanted to know what was actually down there before building on it.

By 1927, his engineers (Fletcher & Mohr) had leveled up to a 2-inch split-spoon sampler and a 140-lb hammer dropped 30 inches — count the blows for 3 six-inch intervals, get your "N-value."

Terzaghi loved it so much he literally named it the "Standard Pe*******on Test" in 1947. ASTM made it official (D1586) in 1958.

Nearly 100 years later, engineers worldwide are still dropping that same 140-lb hammer to find out if your building's foundation is sitting on rock... or pudding. 🏗️

Safety is stronger when we understand the work — not just the procedure.

As a HSE professional, it’s easy to review policies, develop procedures, complete inspections, and identify hazards from a safety perspective. But there is tremendous value in stepping into the field and gaining a firsthand understanding of what our crews actually experience every day.

I recently had the privilege of spending the day working alongside our field team as a Driller’s Assistant with one of our Senior Drillers at Pontil. It gave me the opportunity to experience the work from a different perspective — the physical demands (oh my gosh the physical demands...), equipment, workflow, changing site conditions, communication, and the decisions our crews make throughout their day.

That firsthand experience matters to me.

Effective health and safety shouldn’t be developed for our field staff without understanding the realities of the work they perform. When HSE professionals understand the task, we are better equipped to recognize hazards, evaluate whether controls are practical, ask better questions, develop stronger procedures and training, and most importantly, listen to the people who perform the work every day.

There is also something incredibly valuable about getting your boots dirty alongside the crew. It builds trust, encourages open conversations about safety, and helps bridge the gap between written procedures and how work actually happens in the field.
And one day certainly isn’t enough.

There will be many more days on site to come — learning different tasks, working alongside our crews, asking questions, and continuing to better understand the challenges they face.

Because HSE professionals should never stop learning.

Every hour spent in the field gives us another opportunity to learn, enhance, and grow our safety program at Pontil Drilling — together with the people who know the work best.

Better understanding. Better conversations. Better controls. Stronger safety.

Project Highlight - Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport

In collaboration with Envision Consultants and on behalf of the Toronto Port Authority, we recently conducted geotechnical drilling, cone pe*******on testing, and sediment sampling at the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. This project had its share of challenges, as many of the boreholes were close to shore and in the flight path of the runway, therefore needing all the work to be conducted at night within tight time restrictions. We had our conventional drill rig back to back with our cone pe*******on system, running at the same time and sampling the same locations.

We welcome unique projects like this that challenge us and push us out of our comfort zone, we are grateful for the opportunity to have worked with Envision and the Toronto Port Authority on this. The view didn't hurt either!

Mark McClean — Employee Highlight

This week, Pontil Drilling is proud to recognize Mark McClean for his hard work and growing expertise in the drilling industry.
With over 8 years of experience and a Class 3 Well Technician License, Mark continues to expand his skills as a Limited Access Driller in Training. His experience includes PQ soil coring, water well drilling, auger and fluid-based drilling, as well as limited access and conventional drilling applications.
Mark’s dedication, adaptability, and willingness to take on new challenges make him an important part of our crew.
