How do root balls form? Since pipes are such a confined space, a root that finds its way inside will curl and "ball up”. Any waste from your home's drains can stick to it, and it becomes quite the mass. This is where the term "root ball" comes from. It is one of the primary reasons why sinks begin to clog and toilets won't flush. The second picture is what a healthy drain system should look like.
