Snow is accumulating out there. It is extremely important to ensure that any vents are free from obstructions. The metal sidewall vent pictured is for an oil fired heating system, but they are also sometimes used for other heating appliances such as propane or pellet stoves.

If you have a box that looks like the one pictured below, go outside immediately to clear any accumulated snow away from it.

Do you have a hot water heating system with heat pumps as a secondary heat source? If yes, this is for you.

During cold weather events with high winds, drafts can occur within your walls, where your heating pipes are located. If you are using your heat pumps as a primary heat source, your pipes will be at an extremely increased risk of freezing.

It is strongly recommended that you turn your heat pumps off during these times, and use your hot water heating system to prevent pipes from freezing.

Spending a few extra dollars on heat is a very small price to pay versus dealing with frozen pipes and flooding.

I have been discovering an alarming number of cracked oil fired boilers recently. Please ensure that your heating contractor checks for this when they are servicing your heating appliances. This condition creates a potential life safety risk and should not be taken lightly.

With the forecasted amounts of snow coming, this is worth a repost

If your home heating appliance is equipped with this style vent (chimney) that protrudes through a sidewall of your house, please ensure that it is not obstructed by snow and ice during a snowfall event. Keeping this clear is of extreme importance and could save your life.
