On Today's 'Tuesday with Ted...' To Recover or Not to Recover, That is The Question.

Ah, spending quality time with my son on a roof. On a hot Tuesday. What fun. But back to the subject at hand, when is it okay to cover an existing roof system with a new one. Ideally, I like to see the old roof system stripped down to the roof deck. However, there are times that we should explore the possibility of installing another roof system over the existing. If there is an expensive slope package already on the roof or we have a membrane installation that won't come off without destroying the roof deck would be two examples. Leaving the membrane in place would help to keep costs down for our clients. Some membrane manufacturers are wanting to see a roof survey showing areas of moisture trapped within where the membrane will need to come off in order to grant a warranty. After all, we should avoid trapping moisture within any roof assembly, even if it is within the original roof system.

This is a service that we now offer, though the scanner depth is limited to a system no thicker than 4" at this time. There are other restrictions as well with this method, but feel free to reach out for a quote and we'll see if we can help. Easy to carry out the scan, but the setup takes time. Hence the extra hand today, where laying out a 2-meter grid was accomplished by the boy.

On Today's Episode of 'Tuesday with Ted'... The death of a giant. The loss of a friend. 🌲

With the evacuation order lifted Saturday morning, Mary and I were eager to get up to the cabin to see first hand the devastation to the surrounding area. Our place is at Big Bar Lake and across the way there is a Provincial Park which we started coming to in 2000, usually in the fall when the fishing is good and the lake too cool for swimming (sorry Mary). After securing our property after we arrived, we set off in the canoe to explore the park. The Otter Marsh Interpretive Trail found at the West end was a nice 5km walk through the woods, in which lived one of the cooler trees I had seen at the time. A big Douglas Fir over 300 years old. Later in life I would discover monsters on Vancouver Island that made this one seem puny- elevation and cold winters/short summers lead to trees in the Cariboo growing slower than ones found on the coast. This tree was always a photo op during our hike. Unfortunately, the fire ran hot through the area, burring even the soil. In areas all that was left of trees was the hollowed-out earth where the roots once were. Ash was ankle deep when we stepped off the gravel path. Working our way through the trail, around the mess of fallen trees, we came across the old Fir tree. The thick bark could not save it from crown fire. Looking back, it was this area and this tree that really started to rekindle a love for the outdoors that was planted by my parents all those years ago when I was a young boy. It was very sad to see the tree and area we love so much utterly destroyed by a fire that is still raging in the distance and has so far consumed 157,000 hectares.

On Today's Episode of 'What Were They Thinking Wednesday?!' 😲

While reviewing a commercial flat roof in order to provide the owners with a maintenance report, I came across a missing paver at a RTU. A little further along I noted another. And then the XPS isolation sheet that was under a paver left in place and covered with ballast. A little further away I found the missing pavers. They had been broken up and set around some new vents that had been installed. The installation of the vents was incorrect, which I think the installer knew as they used the broken pavers as ballast to hold the material together while the sealant used cured. Once again we find cause to use a qualified roofing contractor to carry out any repairs or modifications to your roof system.

On Today's 'What Were They Thinking Wednesday?!' By golly! Timed traffic control sucks. 🚦

I waited 5 minutes on highway 1 with no oncoming traffic . Dying in the oppressive heat was I. I guess flag girls/guys are being replaced by this idiotic device. At least introduce AI so that it will let people through when there is no bloody traffic coming the other way. As I write this I think it's funny that I complain about a lost 5 minutes, but by damn, I am only getting older and don't have time to waste.👴

On Today’s ‘Tuesday with Ted,’ I spent the last week with the family at the cabin.

On the way up we stopped at the Cariboo Lodge in Clinton for the most excellent dinner. It is fun bringing kids into an older style pub where there may or may not be some highly intoxicated residents. When I was getting some fuel at one of the local gas stations I couldn’t help but notice the firewood they were selling. Considering where this town is, I am surprised to see construction grade lumber (some treated at that) being sold to campers for firewood when we are surrounded by nothing but forests and many many dead trees. However, it was a good deal, and so it took some effort to tame my inner Dutchman and not buy this heavily discounted “firewood”.

On Today's Episode of 'What Were They Thinking Wednesday!?"😲

Every now and again, we will review a roof install for a single family residence that recently had their roof system replaced. Typically, I don't like doing these as the install is often a disaster which results in very lengthy reports. That's why I send Matt! Haha, just joking buddy. Never mind the poor flashing details at the curbs, check out the ill-fitting skylights. Obviously the curb is too small and the roofer added in some strips of plywood to support the skylight frame. This resulted in a very poor seal as can be seen by the light streaming out.

If you have recently had your roof replaced (either flat or slope) and you want to make sure the installation meets the requirements, give us a call and I'm sure that Matt, I mean we, would be happy to help out. Seriously though, Matt is one of the more knowledgeable inspectors out there and I am happy he is part of our team.😁

We’re hiring a Junior Roof Inspector!

Responsibilities include:

• Performing roof condition assessments of residential, multi-residential, commercial, and institutional facilities and preparation of reports.
• Perform leak investigations.
• Carry out field review of construction work in progress on both new and replacement projects and report on progress and the contractor's adherence to specifications.
• Producing reports that include photo observations.
• Attend on-site meetings as required.
• Regular contact with all parties throughout the work cycle.

Duties will include:

• Work setting in both your home office and field environment.
• Interpretation of re-roofing and deck replacement details.
• Producing inspection reports.
• Safely working at heights including accessing buildings by ladders, mechanical lifts, and stairs.
• Typical duties associated with working in a roof inspection firm.
• Co-ordinate all input for time billing and job costing.
• Other tasks may be required to ensure timely completion of deadlines.

Requirements & Qualifications:

• Training will be provided for the appropriate candidate to obtain their RRO certification.
• Some knowledge in all areas related to roof assemblies such as proper application of material to roofs and decks.
• Exceptional attention to detail, specifically with accuracy and completeness.
• Some construction experience is required, with preference given to those with a roofing background.
• Must be able to write technical English at an intermediate/advanced level.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Must be proficient with Microsoft Word and Outlook.
• Good with people and can provide direction without conflict.
• Demonstrated willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities.
• Naturally self-motivating and multi-tasking ability.
• A great attitude.
• Able to work individually and with others.
• Available to work longer hours as needed.

On Today's Episode of 'What Were They Thinking Wednesday?!'😲

Sometimes my team come across roofs that have been maintained far longer than they should have been.. Here we can see multiple repairs have been made, tying in with totally deteriorated shingles. I don’t know how the roofer made the decision to stop when they did. This is money down the drain as all will be soon replaced.

As some guy once said, ‘You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, Know when to walk away and know when to run’.

On Today's 'Tuesday with Ted...'

Ah, what the weekend that was. Or, otherwise known as the weekend from you know where. It was grad weekend for my son and I had foolishly agreed to a 3am Saturday morning volunteer spot to clean after the dry grad event, totally forgetting about the Brain Tumor Walk the next day.

At 10am.😬

Sitting around after dinner on Friday night with friends didn't help either. My fabulous daughter reminded me at 10:30 that night that I needed to get up at 2:45. Haha on me. Seriously though, proud of my son who is growing up to be a good, smart person. The walk was successful as well: my wife's team was the second highest fundraiser which was nice. Oh, and the dim sum afterwards was fantastic.

On Today's 'Tuesday with Ted'... 🧠

Here we are, 1 week away from the Brain Tumor Walk. As many of you probably know, my wife developed a brain tumor four years ago. Four craniotomies later, and she is tumor free. This picture is of my family that was taken at the last walk 3 years ago. We are all in this picture due in part to the ongoing research and the development of technology to treat such serious diseases.
