A reminder for residents living near salt water:
If your electrical meter box is showing signs of rust or corrosion, don’t ignore it. Salt air can be extremely hard on outdoor electrical equipment, and over time corrosion can seriously deteriorate the meter enclosure and electrical connections.
The photos below are a good example of just how bad this deterioration can become. Once corrosion gets to this point, it can become an electrical and fire-safety concern and the meter equipment needs to be replaced.
Take a few minutes to visually inspect your meter box from the outside. If you notice significant rust, holes, deterioration, or other signs of corrosion, have it inspected by a licensed electrical contractor and replaced if necessary.
Electrical equipment and salt water don't mix — catching corrosion early can prevent a much bigger problem later.
